Scratchbuilding a mini-me JKU

Yes keep going! Where do you get these frames with straight axles? I'd enjoy building one of these

I will see about another tiny build, no one has complained yet. :)

1st, I want to say, Axial has some great stuff, but its basically all built out of the box, and that's no fun for me. I have some kits, but I'm a scratch builder.

So I hunt all over ebay and 2 websites, RC4WD and RPP for various chassis and axles, transfer cases, transmissions, etc...

Just about anything you have in you Jeep, mud truck, monster truck or any other 1:1 vehicle, I can probably find a miniature of it in one of these 3 places I mentioned.

Sometimes, to be cheap, I buy the square 1\2 " iron tube from a hardware store. And with some heat, a vice and something to grab ahold of it, you can make the axle humps in the frame, and then saw the tube in half length ways for separate identical frame rails..

Tamiya has axles, RC4WD has the most expensive but more accurate axles, Axial has axles, HPI has axles.. (these are ones that resemble solid axles or leafed, linked or whatever you want.) Some axles are pretty goofy looking and I stay away from them.

If you want to build something, let me know, I may have parts I can send your way, and I want nothing for them. I have tons of little stuff, that's just wasting away now.

If you find something and you have a question about it, hit me up, I try to lurk couple times a day while I'm at work

EDIT = I'll bet no one knows my avatar, I have a feeling most are too young here.. :)

Its Super Chicken and his pal Fred in the "Chicken Coup" lol

You, my friend, build som every nice scalers!!!!! On the JK.....what axles are those? They're definietly not SCX10 axles. Don't really look like VP products, either. Maybe RC4WD? Either way, you did an excellent job on the JK! The Yota's look great, too! I'm currently working on a JK build myself...sort of. I pulled the axles and all running gear (trans, electronics, etc.) out of my Wraith and am building basically an SCX10 with AR60 axles (Wroncho). Having issues mouting the upper control arms, though, which means I either need to fab up a plate or buy one. For me....I think buying one is easier....and probably mroe cost effective, as my fab skills are very minimal. Using New Bright JKU hard body, though, that alread has everything chopped off. Will use SCX10 flares and have a cuople of ideas for bumpers, etc. Wheels & tires are RC4WD Hitmans (Raceline MOnster beadlocks) and 2.2 Super Swaper TSL's. Trying to build a copy of my 1:1 but it may be a little difficult seeing as how no one makes the Gen Right tire carrier I have....at least not that I know of. May have to learn how to fab up my own before too long.

Keep up the great work, though! Thoroughly enjoying it!

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here, but Axial makes many flavors of the SCX10...here's a JKU in kit form.-- http://www.axialracing.com/products/ax90027

...and download THESE INSTRUCTIONS to see the difficulty level building the kit.

Some are RTR (ready to run) and some are kit (but require more to complete, like radio, speed controller and stuff)

Seems you knew this already by mentioning Axial in a post already, but the frame/axle kit question had me like....so just in case.

Thank you, very much !

The JK has a set of RC4WD K44's on it. I bought my 2 grandsons the Axial Spawn, (Wraith with a different body) maybe once they destroy them, I will steal the axles for something. lol

Sounds like you have it figured out, when do I get to see it ? :)

My biggest issue is I need to learn to braze, weld or something, I'm really not that good with metal.

Thank you again !!

Does anyone want to see the RC YJ I'm working on in a video or even more pictures of its build or am I annoying the hell out of everyone ?

Thank you

Absolutely! With emphasis on pictures of your kit-bashing, and custom scratch-built fabrications please. ;)

Oh yeah I was aware of that I was kinda asking more of like where he found the stuff he used, like where he got individual axles and just frames, sort of a piece by piece thing but he answered my question

Um.....I have the SCX10 frame together and the motor & trans mounted. Lower links are connected, but those uppers are what's keeping it apart for the time being. Still have a long way to go with it, though. Will be mostly bolt-on parts from RC4WD, SSD, etc.

Yeah....I can't braze, either, else I'd be doing a full cage, etc. on the JK. Lately I've been dumping money into my Axial Yeti now a Losi Mini 8ight T for bashing. I've got three rigs that are down right now taht belong to my almost 6 year old son: Vaterra Slick Rock (Losi Mini Rock Crawler), Losi Micro Trekker (running 110T motor), and LaTrax (Traxxas) Teton that's actually stupid fast on 2S....if you can keep the diffs from exploding. I'm ripping the Traxxas diffs out and building Associated RC18 ball diffs for it...hopefully this weekend if I get time. The Micro just need a ball stud, I just haven't ordered any. I'm going to end up taking it a completely different route and building a Micro Wraith out of it for him. Don't know if you're on RCCrawler or not, but one of the guys over there just released several new chassis for the micros. Been in the making for about two years now.

@ BDSJEEP, I will see what I can do. I gave up getting detailed on my RC forum, because it got to the point, no one really cared, but as long as someone is interested, that's great. Just so ya know I kinda cheated on the YJ I'm building and if I get a thread going on it, I will explain better. :)

@JakeJK, not a problem, I will answer what I can or help.

@ Shortbus, You are an avid RC'er, I see it now. :) You will figure it out, sometimes I have to put it up a shelf and let it sit while I work on another. I usually come up with something after awhile, I just need a change. I usually have 3 builds going on at one time.

edit = I am on RCCRAWLER, but its been a long time. I mostly hang out on ScaleRC4x4, but its dying or so it seems.

This is awesome. As a kid I always wanted to get into RC cars and things, just didn't have a lot of money therefore I wasn't really able to. As an adult I realize it's probably better I didn't...haha. Instead I'm into mountain biking and for the last 3 and a half years my Jeep. If I was into RC vehicles I'd have no time for anything or anyone and probably have even less money..;). So for now I'll continue to live vicariously through this thread. Keep it up. Maybe you can pay homage to WAL and build a mini Moby. I'm sure you don't need any more ideas...

Edit: I shouldn't have looked at the Axial kit. That may be right up my ally..haha

Thank you very much !! :) If your really bored, go here, its 46 pages of RC, clouds, tractors, flowers, etc...mostly RC's. Sorry, no porn though.... :) https://www.flickr.com/photos/jefro59

So far I haven't done very well at stopping building these to save money for my real Jeep, and besides Illinois sucks for having any kind of offroad places and the ones that are here are overrun with side by sides and 4 wheelers, so its easier for me to take these out and trail, I know its not the same, but I still have fun. Honestly I think I have the most fun building ones that no one else has.

I had a thought about building a copy of Eddies white JK, but I got sidetracked with another, the little orange YJ I did that is a few threads down from this one.

It seems I never run out of ideas. :) Here is a couple I'm working on at the moment

I like them! I hear you on a lack of wheeling locations. Same here in TX with all the private lands, but that will change for me in about 6 weeks! Keep at it! Even if I don't comment, I'm always checking back for your updates. (Not in a scary, stalker kind of way  )

I'm kinda the same way, I usually see whats happening here, and another forum, my dying scale rc forum. Its slowly fading away, and it used to be crazy busy.

Thank you saying that, I lose faith fast and figure I'm bothering everyone, because its not really Jeep related, so I hesitate sometimes in posting my builds. No worries on the stalking part, I'm not very cute... :D

EDIT = I would have thought Texas would have some great places, but then I've only driven through the panhandle (think that's what they call it) so I guess I really don't know.

Yeah, well, Texas is all privately owned lands in one form or another (personally or government). You either need to own some, know someone that does or go to an off-road park. I'm looking forward to being back in AZ. I didn't have my Jeep last time I lived there, but know of several trails near the new home and many more within a few hours drive.
