My Experience with the Carson City Jeep

So a couple of weeks back, the AC in Moby stopped working and, thinking that it was the compressor, I went down to Carson City Jeep and purchased a new one. At the time, I was told they didn't have one in stock and that I would be called once it came in. While I was waiting for it, I decided to call up Motech to see what they thought being that we were running a factory AC compressor on an LS and Robbie let me know that the problem I was having may not be related to the compressor. He said that he'd be happy to give things a look and fix it for free if necessary and to make it worth my while, he would even make a few upgrades to our LS kit. All I had to do was come down to his shop in Vegas.

Well, the next day, I received a call from Carson City Jeep stating that the compressor I ordered was in and, being that I no longer needed it, I headed back down to their parts department to request a refund. Of course, when I did this, the guy behind the counter immediately informed me that there would be a 25% restocking fee on all returns. Confused, I explained that I couldn’t be making a return being that I had never taken possession of the compressor. To this, he said that the compressor had to be “special ordered” and because it came in, cancelling it now would have to be treated as a return. When I let him know that I never knew I was making a “special order” and that I was never told about this “return policy”, he said that he would do me a favor, make the restocking fee 10% and that I should take it because it was a real deal. And, this is about when I asked to speak with his manager.

As luck would have it, the parts manager was in the room next to the counter and was listening to the whole conversation. When he came up, he was visibly irritated with me and rudely let me know that I needed to pay a restocking fee and that was that. He said that the AC compressor would need to be shipped back because my Jeep was too old and that he couldn’t use it. When I reminded him of the fact that the compressor was for a 2007-11 Jeep JK Wrangler, one of Chrysler’s hottest selling models, he turned his head to the computer on the counter, threw his hands in the air and barked back that he’s “NEVER had to order one before!!” When I asked if I would have still been charged a restocking fee had I asked for a refund a couple of days ago, back when the compressor was still in route, he exclaimed, just “take your money and get out of here!” No joke, those were his exact words.

Of course, I did just that, came home and then promptly wrote a letter to the president of Carson City Jeep, Steven Christian. In it, I politely explained in a nutshell what had happened and let him know that had I been informed verbally and prior to making my purchase of what they consider to be a “special order” and what their “return policy” was, he wouldn't be hearing from me now. Certainly, had I been told ahead of time, I could have made an informed decision as to whether I still wanted to buy the compressor from them or take my business elsewhere. Being that wasn't the case, I had to endure the rude and unprofessional behavior of his parts manager.

Well, a few days have gone by but, I am happy to say that I did in fact get a personal phone call from Steven Christian and one to apologize for the behavior of his parts manager. He let me know that he completely agreed with my position in this matter, wanted to make sure that I did in fact get a full refund and invited me to come visit him in person. While I wasn't really expecting a response, I am satisfied to have been contacted by someone right from the top and with an effort to make things right. Because of it, I will certainly attempt do business with them again.

Anyway, for those of you in the Northern Nevada area, I thought you might want to hear about my recent experiences with Carson City Jeep.

It amazes me how much customer service has declined in general. It's especially surprising to me that it's so common in the aftermarket Jeep parts area, or in this case a car dealer. Given the cost of this stuff and the high mark-ups on those items, you'd think they'd want to keep their customers coming back. I wont do business with 4wp or with Rebel off-road due to poor customer service, companies I've spent thousands with. With social media, you cant afford to piss people off, or thousands of other potential customers may hear about it before they do business with you.

Glad it sounds like the boss wants to make amends.

The crazy thing is, the parts manager could have easily said that he was "SORRY", very politely and explained how he doesn't make the rules but does have to enforce them. Had he been "NICE" about it instead of being an ASS, I probably wouldn't have pressed the issue. But, being that he was behaving like I was wasting his time and was just such a jerk about it, I just couldn't help but to be a squeaky wheel until I got what I felt I deserved. And, being that he was such a jerk, I just had to take it all the way to the top even after I got what I wanted. Like you, I feel like customer service has really gone by the wayside these day but really, is it so much to ask someone to at least be polite? :rolleyes2:

Rude people suck, I hate when people in sales act like you are wasting their time. You probably did them a favour by having a pretty common part in stock now.

I just can't believe that a dealership in the Nevada desert wouldn't normally keep an A/C compressor in stock for one of Chrysler's most popular vehicles on the road!!!

The chrome trim on my manual shift knob broke off a few months ago, called the dealership and sure enough, they had one in stock. They informed me that it's not the first one they've sold, I guess meaning that it happens quite often.

I'm glad the President made sure you received a phone call and proper apology. Since I'm in automotive retail, I treat every customer as I would want to be treated. Especially since they're the ones putting food on my family's table. Granted some people are just impossible to deal with and I could see them charging you if they had to have the compressor shipped via UPS or FedEx, but not on a standard route truck.

Honestly, I just didn't get it. I mean, Carson City is a small town and I'll probably see this guy at the local grocery store. How do you be a total douche to someone you'll most likely run into on the street?

LOL!! I literally had to ask the guy, "really??" You've NEVER had to order an AC compressor.... here in Nevada??

It's funny because, the parts manager was being such a jerk that other guys around the counter were literally cringing and the kid who ended up issuing my refund was beside himself. I was so stunned by the whole thing that I had to actually ask the parts manager if this is really how he treats all his customers? To that, he just went on berating me. Simply amazing.

This was not aimed towards you Eddie :cheesy:

:cheesy: Sure it wasn't :D

I stand corrected. Thought he picked it up in Carson.

Well hang on, maybe MTG did. I just assumed it was Reno because that's where he lives. I may be the one who stands corrected. If so, I can't imagine how they would have a part like a steering box.

Only reason I thought that was because Doug had Carson's number before he left. Although if they didn't have it he may have called Reno. :idon'tknow:

MTG got it from Lithia in Reno according to his texts to me that afternoon.

My experience and that of my friends has been, deal with the parts dept at Lithia Jeep is good, buying a new Jeep there sucks. Always go outside of Reno to buy the vehicle, bunch of crooks working the stealerships in town, all brands.

Sucks that the Parts Manager at the Carson City Stealership is a douche. Perhaps he's going to be replaced real soon? :idontknow:
Generally when it's 'special order' they state the restocking fee and situation up front. It's on them if they failed to properly notify you.

Sorry you had trouble Eddie. :grayno:

Steering box purchased in Reno.

Part department in Reno is hit or miss, depending on the person/day.

Service department in Reno has been good to me.

Service department in Carson has been good to me.

Sales department in Carson was good.

Sales department in Reno was a joke.

My :two cents:

Edit: Overlander was wrong…yet again. :cheesy:

Unfortunately, like so much in life, knowing someone on the inside is helpful. My sales experience at Lithia was good because I knew the senior salesman personally. He is gone now.

My experience with the parts department has been amusing. I've never dealt with the CC dealership.

One thing is for certain, every regular member of this forum knows far more about Jeeps than any dealership salesperson I have ever met.

You have too much faith in me.

In seriousness, that's terrible service. I recently ran into it while guitar shopping. Some guy tells me a great deal but when I walk in, all of a sudden it's "too large a discount." Safe to say I finished my search at another store.
The best way to deal with it is to take it to the next level until you find someone who knows how to treat a customer.
