A TJ called The Lion

Damn things are so small there is no good spot for a tank.
This comment made me think a bit.

When doing such a project, why worry about keeping the tank in the stock location?

I mean, everything else is moving, why not the tank. A 20 gallon rectangular fuel cell on the floor of the "cargo" area would fix all those clearance problems.
I have one I picked up on Craigslist for under $100. Seems like it would solve a lot of problems, though I'm also sure it would create a few new headaches.

Lion is looking good, going to roar soon from the looks of things👍👍

We did toss the idea back and forth. No reason that tank can't be relocated.
I am eliminating the back seat from the equation so it would have worked out. Moving the tank would have gave us alot more wiggle room out back.
I sorta want to turn this into a truck down the road. Lj length frame. That idea made us keep the rear as is for now.
Thanks. Im happy with how its coming along. Very soon it will be so fun!!!

I’m guessing he wants either room for the backseat or room for gear. You lose everything in a tj with a cell, it’s easy to forget how tiny these things really are.

wooo progress, what kind of pant are you planning to use? I’ve had good longevity with epoxy based automotive primer, nothing but rusty headaches with everything I’ve used off the shelf, rust oleum, duplicolor, Bedliner in a can, blah blah blah.

Comments usually get my mind working.

This one makes me thankful to live in the part of the country that I do, where the rust monster is mostly kept at bay pretty easily👍

California may have problems, and I whine about them enough, but it has a lot of good as well.

Just some cheap paint this round. Ill strip it all and powder coat soon enough.
I spent some time in san Diego and loved it. I was just a visitor tho. Went to spend 3 days with my sister. I stayed for 8 months. A guy from Michigan sure can fall in love with all that sunshine!

It would definitely have been easier to have 86’d the tank for a fuel cell In rear seat area. He has plans to make it the groups mobile kitchen. Therefore we had to leave the back open for now.

Shock towers are burned in. Front axel has been mocked and removed for some final touches. Doing ball ball joint eliminator on upper ball joints and a high steer kit gets welded on. Ram should be here this week( thanks to my brother).
Fromt fenders have been mocked up and we cut the hood.
Link arms are all out waiting on paint. Frame is ready to paint. Rear axel need a couple wellds and its ready for paint also. We need to fab the rock sliders but atlesst we have that material. Glad itbwas paid for over a year ago. Price of steel is ridiculous currently.
By the end of the week we hope to have thing back together and just waiting on drive shafts.

Really excited to see how it performs on the trails!
Me too!!! Im itching to get behind the wheel and see what it does.
Thinking its gonna do pretty well. Im sure I lost some turning radius but otherwise should be a great wheeler.
I still need to re gear soon be bit doggish till I do. Hoping to find a ruby tcase for it down the road too.

Anyone ever run 1 tons on 40s with 3:73 gears?
I'm not gonna either.
Really wanted to jump to 5:38s but at this time it wasn't in the budget. Going with 4:88s for a bit.
Down the road I want to invest in chromoly shafts and I have to change some things at that point so that's when ill make the final swap to 5:38s.
Also ordered a spool for the front.
The rear is getting welded for the time being. That also will get a spool when I change shafts.
Since the Lion won't be seeing any road action im skipping the arb lockers.
Started tearing down the axels yesterday in preparation for the gears. It will change the time frame of getting this done but its well worth a small delay.

Got the axels stripped down and ready to send down the road for the gears to be installed. Matt got the necessary ram mounting blocks welded in. Knuckles are now full custom with upper ball joint eliminators and high steer arms welded on. The knuckles even seen a couple coasts of paint yesterday. Took a pic with fresh diff cover on the sterling. Like a kid I couldn't resist. Frame is screaming for some fresh paint, think Sunday or Monday ill do that. Most of the fab work is done other than sliders and some minor work on front bumper. Getting close to putting this thing together again.
