I would imagine most are square, doesn't have to be super huge maybe a 5 gallon size since the Renny tank is only 12 or so.

I run about town and I'm down a 1/4 tank getting to be a pain

I think the major issue is plumbing and how to keep fumes out of cabin when refueling.

They already make spare tire fuel cells. Google it. A electric valve to switch tanks and pumps and wala. Only issue I can think of is if the pump is monitored by the computer and doesn't know to run if the original pump is not on.

Easiest route is probably just a jerry can or rotopax on the roof rack.
