Best coilover setup thoughts

Getting rid of my built Ram as I don't use it for what it was intended for anymore, and we decided to get into a 392 once we get it sold. Now that our girls are older, we want to get out west a couple times a year and do some cool trails and alot of fast running. No real interest in crawling. It's super cool but just not our cup of tea. So that being said, what's the best options out there for the "new" JL platform? I'm looking to go with a coilover LA kit, and being in the northeast, RK is real close and I've been looking at their new Rockzilla setup. Thoughts on this system and any alternatives in this quality range would be great.
 
Being that you live in the rust belt, I would NOT run a coilover setup unless you only plan on using your Jeep in the non-winter months. Salt and or mag-chloride will destroy your suspension system.

That said, I know that brands tend to be regional and while I'm sure the RK kit is good for your neck of the woods, I personally feel that EVO makes a great setup and for the kind of hard and fast bombing across the desert that you're wanting. I also like the fact that they use Johnny Joints which have been proven to work extremely well and of course, King coilovers.
 
Single coilovers alone won’t get you go fast through the desert or anywhere else.
Combine them with triple bypass and proper tuning then you can go fast.
Go fast stuff will test everything to its breaking point especially with 392 power.
Axles will be short lived T-Case won’t last long I’d expect drive shafts etc.
question is how fast can you afford to go?

Also, regardless of what you choose to go with, just be aware the coilovers are noisy and require a lot of maintenance.

I dunno, my EVO singles have been a total game changer in the desert. Of course, nothing like the double throw down set up, but pretty bad ass nonetheless. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm use to working on my hotrods that all have spherical bearings and coilover a setups, two of which are radical builds that need attention all the time, so that type of deal doesn't bother me. I actually prefer it so I can keep an eye on everything.

As of now, there is no DTD for the rear on a JL or at least, that is in production. EVO has been working on it and it looks good but I'm not sure when it'll be available for sale. They do custom work though at Off Road Evolution.

Good to know! Now I was reading that the LAs aren’t necessary on the JLs and do nothing but cause clearance issues unlike on the JKs. Any truth to that?

I would never pretend to know as much as what you can read on the internet but what I can tell you is that I've been doing this Jeep thing for almost 30 years now. What I can also tell you is that I've been running factory arms and long arms on all my modern Jeeps or should I say, since Wranglers started to come with coils. With that said, I would be the first to say that long arms are not 'necessary' on ANY Jeep but they will correct suspension geometry and help smooth out your ride ON pavement and when bombing across the desert. Where they 'can' be a potential clearance liability is on the rocks but if I recall, rock crawling is not something you're wanting to do with your Jeep. But hey, what would I know.
 
No joke, when I was planning my rebuild, I had multiple people tell me and swear up and down that I wouldn't be able to rock crawl with trailing arms. I of course didn't listen....oh and it's been doing just fine 🤪
LOL - to be fair, trailing arms are a lot longer but for all the hoopla over not being able to rock crawl with longer arms is just silly. Typically, it comes from people who have no real and or personal experience running them or at least, from what I have seen.

As mentioned, EVO will or at least should have a rear kit available that looks pretty sweet that will help keep up with the front DTD. You need to know though that go-fast suspension likes up travel and to get it, you will have to do a lot of cutting, especially on the JL. This means cutting open the rear fender wells adding towers that go inside and most likely result in you losing the factory rear seat, maybe. To outboard the coilover/bypasses over the axle you will also need to run triangulated uppers....this means moving the gas tank along with other components. My point is, if you really want something to go as fast as you say, plan on a good amount of modifications...to do it right anyways. But by all means, if you don't mind all that, it's certainly possible.

Funny you would say as much. Mel has a JL frame and has the DTD all worked up on it and while the plan was to transfer his 392 and body on it, he's been reluctant to being that he likes the 392 so much as is LOL
 
Any reason he chose not to go with the rear lever system for the JL? I’ve seen what he has coming and it’s def sweet, but that a big commitment with the towers and gas tank relocation.
