CONCRETE ARROW QUEST : Search for Transcontinental Airway Beacons

Yeah, and if I remember reading Eddie's original post correctly, they started in New York and were scattered across the entire country.

However, I have a hard time believing the ones on the east coast are still in tact.

I looked online to find the areas for the ones through PA. I cant find a single one still around. Just the historical plaque marking the site of the AirMail fields. Like the one in Bellefonte PA is now a middle school. I was hoping to go see some.. no such luck!

Be sure to post them up if you do, I would like to see some also.

This made me curious, come to find out there are quite a few of these in Wyoming. One is pretty close to home. I know there is a gate to the road, but I don't know if it's private land or blm road. Next time I'm home I'm going to see if I can find it.
Edit, actually two of them.

So I'm at work at green river Wyoming doing some research, come to find out there was 3 within 20 miles of me.
For some reason, there are two #15 locations. Not much left of these.

The second number 15 was pretty much rubble.

Thanks, I really had no idea these were so close to me. Looking at the map of the route, they even used to stop at my little boring town of Rawlins.

Nice find!

Nice find Marlo!! That's so cool!

Thanks guys.
I have found six really nice looking ones that aren't rubble. Going to try to knock out all of them this summer. These are all within a 100 miles from home. Some Aerial views of the summer's quest.

So back to work and when I got to green river, turns out there was another arrow 12 miles west. Little back story, before I-80 there was just the rail road tracks across the country. I guess these pilots used the rail road tracks and referred to them as "the iron compass". Since I work for the rail road I pass a lot of these everyday and had no idea. Anyways, this gem is on rail road property and manager said it was ok. Here is #14 Bryan.

Aerial view.

You are right in that the first "transcontinental airway" route essentially followed the very first "transcontinental railroad". Of course, the transcontinental railroad pretty much followed the California Emigrant Trail. It's one of many ways, they are all tied together and what makes them so cool :yup:

Thank you for posting your recent finds here on this thread!!

Looking at this website, supposedly there was an arrow 7 miles east of my house. I looked on back country navigator and it shows a beacon. So armed with a ½ tank of gas and a cup of coffee I set off to find Sinclair#27.

Unfortunately no arrow at this location but there was a concert pad with a marking. 1432132931155.jpg 1432132931155.jpg 1432132957325.jpg
I looked around and all I found was this old license plate.

So I'm not sure about this location, but every website says this was a arrow location.

Wow!! You're just going gang busters on these arrows!!

I have no doubt that what you found was a beacon location. Most of the ones you can find out in California and even Nevada no longer have the arrowhead but still have the foundation to the tower and/or generator shed. Way cool find on the 1947 Colorado plate too :yup:
