The Walkman introduced the concept of a personal portable entertainment device, with headphones to block out the world. Of course there are other significant (amplifying) events such as the Apple iPOD and Bluetooth ear buds which are so small it is difficult for others to see that they are there.

I do think that the personal portable entertainment device is a big reason for changes of behavior. But the other reason might be the rise of unpleasant people like yourself. I am not sure if the two are related.
