Watch your rugged ridge tire carrier

Was noticing my spare tire getting a little bouncy so I got out to look to find this.ImageUploadedByWAYALIFE1364910076.232792.jpg
Once I took it off I could see it was broke all the way through and starting to crack on the other side. This could have been bad if the 35" tire let go down the high way.

Thanks for the heads up. I have seen this before and something similar on TeraFlex tire carriers as well.

oh wow yeah thanks for the heads up! gotta make sure if you get this you get someone to reenforce it

Have we been exceeding the weight limits of the tire carriers or have the makers started using cheaper and thinner metals without reienforments? This is the second manufacturer I've heard having this problem in as many months :(

Assuming everything is installed and mounted as stated in the instructions provided, weight should not be an issue. If it's fails anyway, their clearly is a problem with the instructions provided, material used, design of it and/or in the quality control during manufacturing.

Thats what I'm thinking, I'm not a Mechanical engineer but just looking at the RR tire carrier pic above, Clearly the shear point at the top of that plate screams for reienforcment.. At the very least a corner brace at the top of the attachment could have spread the load out ofver a longer line and given it enough strength to hold under "rough" conditions. Do these manufactureres think that we only drive these units to the mall and back??

Shine, Have you contacted RR yet??

Lack of quality control!:yup:
It scares  me more knowing these same company's make make lift kits too.

The cost of tire carriers and problems associated with them has made me decide to just put the spare in the back of my JK and make it a 2 seater only. Now I get to see plenty out of the rear view, don't have to spend $700 on a tire carrier that can possible break or get snagged up on rocks. Now I'm just trying to figure out what rear bumper to go with.

I'm a big strong guy and still relitively young, I'm thinking of putting it up on a roofrack till I can get an EVO carrier with Armoring on the back panels. Else at least when not going on a trip (will be my daily driver also) leaving it in the garage, I have AAA after all.

That should be an easier fix then the teraflex one. Weld that back together and gusset it and you should be good to go.

Yes emailed rr and no response as of yet. Going to weld it and put some gussets in this weekend. All post some pics when done. Shouldn't have to do the extra work when u order something though if u are under there standards. They say u can run a 35" I was running a 35". Yes I wheel it a lot but I'm pretty gentle.
