What was wrong with the normal Rubicon ones?

Yes, it was something extra on the XR. Can be bought in sets of either front or rear.
FYI, if you're going to do a JT, get 2 sets of fronts.

What needed to be done to install these? Do existing plastic rivets come out (and are replaced) or does the mounting use some other strategy?
I would be interested in doing this if it keeps more mud off the Jeep.

Removal of existing plastic rivets holding fender liner to flare. Possibly have to drill some extra holes. Need plastic rivets and a plastic rivet install tool.
Do a search for XR fender flare installation, there are several out there.

You have to remove most of the existing plastic rivets and install new ones with the flares some drilling is required took me 15 minutes for all four fenders easy job!

I got 100 rivets same as OEM Mopar rivets for 9.99 on Amazon Jeep dealers will charge over 4 dollars per rivet!This is a listing of JUST the extensions, you would still need rivets.
