Most of us on this forum are JK owners, but if you are like me, you may have owned other years and series and can appreciate or drool over other off road vehicles too. This thread is dedicated to the vintage iron, the barn finds, the ones sitting in a field. If you find something worth sharing, post it up!

Yesterday I saw this Jeep Forward Control (FC) getting trailered through Phoenix. Very cool to see it and other than being on a trailer, it looks to be in great running condition which is incredible!

Yes, that would be the wife's 40mpg hwy Mercedes. Such a slap in my 40" tire running jeep's grill! I know my jeep is what it is, and I don't complain about mileage, but how cool would it be to pull some mpg numbers above 30 on the hwy in our JK's. On our trip to Cali last week, the diesel E-class got 678 miles on one tank.

I love German cars. Neighbor just picked up a SLK AMG that I got to drive this weekend. What a fun car! It's not getting 40 MPGs though...at least not while I was driving it. ;)

The technology of an AIR powered vehicle, would you own one? Okay, it's not a 4x4 but it is an OHV! It's as clean as it gets for the greenies.

"If you haven't already accepted that motorcycles running on something other than dead dino juice are the real deal, then you probably should come around. In many cases, they perform just as well as their fuel-burning brethren, and, depending on from where you get the electricity, they run cleanly. Now, they are getting even cleaner with the introduction of the air-powered bike.

The O2 Pursuit, a project from an engineering school graduate in Australia, runs off compressed air stored in an on-board tank. Dean Benstead's project began with a rotary air compression engine, around which he built a dirt bike. He started with a Yamaha WR250R frame, and added a scuba-diving tank and a 25-pound engine to power the rear wheel. Squeeze the throttle and air is released to accelerate the bike. And its stats are impressive. The O2 Pursuit gets 62 miles of travel on a full tank, and can hit a top speed of 87 mph.

Air beats electric both for convenience and environmental kindness. There is no battery to dispose of when the cells eventually break down, filling up with air takes two minutes rather than hours required for charging, and it can be stored in an inert state forever. And while the air-powered car is little more than a four-wheeled scam we’ve been hearing about for decades, the low weight of a bike is perfectly suited for the application."

"When the air comes out, its in the same state as when you compressed it" Benstead said. "You haven't technically used anything"

that is pretty cool. hard to believe that it really can get 62 miles out of a tank. i have to wonder how long it would last on the trails we have out west like in desert hills or the mountains. i mean, i would have to think that would require more power/torque to move in those conditions and suck... or, should i say "blow" more power. also, would you really have the same amount of power from a full to empty tank? i somehow think not. i think they need to send me one for more testing :D

I posted on Facebook already, btu I used to refuel those back when I was in Iraq in early 2003 for the initial invasion of Iraq. The CH-53E helicopter I flew on and worked on had 16k lbs of internal fuel tanks we carried since there were no bases for the convoys to stop at back then, so we landed in the desert and they pulled up for gas. $50 mil mobile gas station with .50 cal machine guns. :D I'm pretty sure all those axles are driven, since it's designed to pull it's loads through adverse terrain.

One of my best friends here in AZ owns quite a few incredible, purpose built rigs. Here are two CJ-5's from his fleet. The red one is a serious trail rig that will out flex and articulate anything my EVOJEEP can even think of doing, and yes it has a V8, TH400 auto, Atlas two speed, coilovers, fully tubed and caged, trussed axles, 38" Swamper TSL's and more. The blue rig is an over the top street driven, sand drag jeep, Aqualu CJ-5 body, 700+HP big block, full boxed square tubing frame, full roll cage, 35" Boggers, and a suspension a jeeper wouldn't understand unless they were in to 1/4, straight line vehicles. It take some serious cajones to hold this thing in a straight direction and press the skinny pedal to the floor. Not sure if the video link will work, Mel Wade posted this on his Facebook page.

OMG! There is little else in this world like listening to an American V-8 in a CJ, especially one that can go off-road. Remember the days when it was the engine and not the stereo that made the vehicle? Phew, both give me primitive stirrings.:thumb::thumb:

Here are a bunch of things I saw in Iceland this summer. Some of these things are insane  ! The Ford was a small one, there were ones where they took 2 of them cut them in half and recombined them to make a somewhat stretched Excursion with 6 doors, most of these are Tour vehicles but some are peoples personal cars. I mean they do expect 3 meters of snow sometimes so better to be prepared I guess  .

Don't forget the 350x (four stroke). The 350x was downright scary and nearly impossible to keep the front wheel on the ground under power. The upside...you could break the rear wheels loose in any gear if you had the guts to get on it.

I'd take one of these (not instead of a JEEP). 30035

Well said, I have driven these for months at a time in foreign lands. They really are awesome vehicles, but nothing like a jeep, I don't really like the diesel models for around town driving, imagine a 3.8L that has even less ass behind it. Off road, either gas or diesel models are nice.

Having owned a K5 Blazer, I'd say it's likely due to the fact that the exhaust would seep in the cab with the factory routed exhaust. Gawd awful ugly design on this rig, though.

:cheesy: yaaaaaa I bought the Blazer with them on it, I would def never buy them, notice the ones on my truck are the good ol KM2's :). The thornbirds were like ice skates in the snow but I do have to give them a little bit of credit cuz they were bald and I never got stuck in the mud even half way up the tire. Im guessing mainly because of the side paddles. They are also very loud, all I heard on the way back from Anchorage was humming

Yes sir they do!! They are all outfitted and a couple specially designed for doing "Route Clearance" a patrol where you drive down the road (or walk sometimes) looking for roadside bombs and buried bombs in the road. Kind of a nerve racking job but it had to get done...

Those are not beadlocks. The wheels are just a two piece rim, all military tactical vehicles have come with a two piece rim since the HMMWV in the early 80's. The reasoning is that a vehicle crew can then do service or field repairs to a tire without needing a tire machine to remove (or install) a tire onto a wheel. I have done quite a few of the 16.5" HMMWV wheels with only the basic issued tools. Its doable, but its not quick and very tiresome without impact wrenches to remove and then tighten the rim bolts. In the Army its known as -10 (dash ten) or 10 level maintenance, basically meaning "operator" level. On this MATV's tire, it would probably just get changed back in the rear on a Forward Operating Base where they have real tools to work on stuff that big, the tire alone weighs around 400lbs.

No problems brother! I have never broken apart one of the MATV wheels, but have changed those tires for its spare on a few occasions when they were destroyed from a blast. Even just changing one out for the spare is a serious ass kicking event, it's usually a three or four man job at a minimum. :icon_crazy:

We had one MATV tire take a round through the sidewall. CTIS kept it manageable until we got to a small ANP outpost to change it out (PSD with highers, no time to stop and play. That, and we never could figure out where it came from). Talk about a workout. The spare broke the first hand crane, so we had to take a crane off one of the others.
