View Full Version : Dynatrac CODE1 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Build

We are all pretty excited about the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL starting to hit showroom floors. We actually spent a week hanging out in the Detroit area waiting for ours to arrive to a local dealer, but we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves in this build thread.

Tony Carvallo, who now works for us at Dynatrac, was the Jeep Product Planner for the JL. That means he was part of the team the defined what the new Wrangler would be, and he fought hard to make sure it was the best Jeep possible. He also wanted to make sure that it was an ideal canvas for all of us who like to build Jeeps to start with.

A couple of years ago, he and Fred Williams at Dirt Every Day, hatched the idea of being the first to build a JL on 42s. The vision for the Jeep evolved as they talked and brainstormed, and with Tony’s move to work for Dynatrac in the fall of 2017, the idea turned into a plan.

CODE1 is the name of the Dynatrac 2018 Jeep Wrangler. It was one of the first JLs to be produced and sold to a customer – us! It will be the first on 42-inch tall tires. And our vision for the vehicle is an overlander that is also competent at rock crawling. The tall and narrow Maxxis Trepedor tires will make it stand out, but we will also be converting it into a long-wheel base two-door, deleting and filling in the rear door openings. We hope to create a vehicle that is capable and cool looking.

The CODE1 build will be features in an episode of Dirt Every Day. And to make it extra exciting, we started the build on Friday, January 12, and we need to be done with it to do final photos and video on January 20! So 8 days to do custom body work and convert the vehicle into a great off-roader with parts that, for the most part, don’t exist. Go!

We originally ordered a red JL, which explains our first photo. But it got slowed down in the congestion of JLs leaving the assembly plant. So we started week-long hunt in SE Michigan and Ohio for a 4-door JL that wasn’t already promised to a customer. We ended up buying a silver Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport at Dave Dennis Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Dayton, Ohio. They were extremely helpful, and even stayed open a little late on a Saturday so we could purchase the Jeep and drive it off the lot in the same day.

289749

Next up – drive it across the country to Dynatrac in Huntington Beach, CA, where we’ll tear the Jeep apart. We had delusions of a cool roadtrip, meeting up with fellow Jeep fans and doing some off-roading. The reality of a winter drive through the Heartland and the pressure of a tight build timeline urged us into making the 2,800 mile trip in 3 Ĺ days instead.

289751

We spent the night in Glenwood Springs, CO. Hard to beat the beauty of this part of the country!

289752

And our road trip ended at our building in Huntington Beach. Now it’s time to get to work transforming this JL into the Dynatrac CODE1 Jeep!

289753

The first step in a successful build is making a plan. Especially when you only have 8 days to make everything happen.

289754

The first modification to a Jeep is usually removing parts that you want to upgrade. The front and rear bumpers were the first to come out of CODE1, followed by the hard top, rear doors and, of course, the axles.

289755

Fred believes he is the first one to take a reciprocating saw to a JL.

289757

It’s hard to believe that just a few weeks before, some workers in an assembly plant were putting together the doors, door panels and windows. And here we are blowing them back apart! The rear doors had to be completely disassembled so our body man could create correctly-shaped fill panels for the rear door openings. We’ll be using a Bestop softop to complete the long-wheelbase two-door look.

We will update the build thread as the vehicle progresses this week!

UPDATE 01-19-18

Our updates on this thread are a day or two behind, but we are right now in the last planned day, and we’re hoping to go wheeling tomorrow. We’ll see if we make that deadline or if we have to push it back a day. Either way, we are definitely in the final stretch!

290193
With the EVO Manufacturing 4-inch Extreme Overlanding suspension system installed, we cycled the suspension and checked for clearance issues with the massive 42x14.50-17 Maxxis Trepedor tires.

290194
We’re using MOPAR High Top fenders which give us a couple of additional inches of clearance around the wheel openings but still retain a factory look. No, that’s not a masking tape drive flange on the ProRock XD60. At this point, we had not assembled the front axle, so we just taped over the empty hub to keep debris out. One of our guys thought it would be clever to put a Dynatrac decal on it.

290195
With the suspension sorted out, we could take the axles out and get them over to welding and assembly to finish them up. We’re using an Eaton ELocker in the XD60 front, along with 5.38 gears.

290196
With most of the mechanical work done, it was time to change the color. CODE1 is supposed to have an overlanding, rock crawler, military look to it when complete. So we are doing a Matte Military Green vinyl wrap on it.

290197
Now CODE1 is starting to look the part.

290198
Bestop customized a softop for us. This black canvas top has zip-out side panels that go the full length of the rear section – combining where the back door was and the factory rear-window section. We’ll be able to roll these up or remove them.

290199
Here’s the full side view so you can get a better idea of the overall look with the wheels, tires, MOPAR flares, long-wheelbase two-door and the canvas top.

290200
And the view from the front with the EVO bumper in place with the Warn ZEON Platinum winch and Baja Design LP9 LED off-road lights.

290380
And now we’re done! The Dynatrac CODE1 Jeep Wrangler JL is complete! We will be heading out to the desert soon to do some off roading with it. Let us know what you think of the way it turned out!

As promised, some pics of the Dynatrac CODE1 JL going on its maiden off-road voyage!

The past couple of days have been very busy on the CODE1 build at Dynatrac. With the JL pretty well disassembled, we could start mocking up new parts.

290072
The back seat and back doors have been removed, and they wonít be coming back. Weíre converting this into a long-wheelbase 2-door: an LJL if you will. And it will have an overlanding theme in addition to being a capable rock crawler. Here, Fred is measuring space for storage racks and our HANS PowerPack 300 portable power and solar generator units.

290073
Weíre using an EVO Manufacturing front bumper and winch mount, and we slide a Warn ZEON 10-S winch into place.

290076
A key part of the build is the massive 42-inch tall Maxxis Trepedor tires. These are very tall and relatively skinny at 14.50 inches. Weíre going to keep the JL as low as possible with these tires, but we think it will require a 4-inch lift.

290077
We will be adding MOPAR high-clearance fender flares, and weíre sure weíll need to do some trimming.

290078
Hereís a view of the bumper, winch and Baja Design LP9 LED lights assembled and the grille back in place.

290079
There are two downward frame extensions that should be cut off for proper bumper fitment and to maximize the approach angle. These are most likely for crash-compatibility; to keep low cars from going under the front end in case of an accident.

290082
Once they were cut, Ely made plates and welded them in place for a clean finish, even though no one is likely to see them tucked up behind the front bumper.

290083
Next it was time to swing the ProRock XD60 front axle in place. This will be an extra-wide (72.5 inches) axle to give the extra-tall tires plenty of room for turning corners and suspension articulation.

290085
In the meantime, Nick our body guy was fabricating fill panels to go where the back doors used to be. He had to mimic the curve of the body and the body lines near the top. He also fabricated a separate railing that will hold the forward part of the custom Bestop softop that weíll install later this week. Watching him massage the metal and trim it was amazing. A true craftsman!

290086
This shows the panel nearly finished for fitment, and starts to give you an idea of what the body will look like.

290087
The metal pieces were welded in several key locations and then the seam covered with body filler. The entire body will be covered in a vinyl wrap Ė Matte Military Green!

290088
Now the vehicle is really starting to take shape. We mounted the tires on Method Race Wheels MR105 beadlocks and started playing with suspension travel and ride height.

The suspension is similar in design, but there are changes that required most of the brackers to be reworked. The axles are also wider (72.5 for our axles).

UPDATE 01-19-18

Our updates on this thread are a day or two behind, but we are right now in the last planned day, and weíre hoping to go wheeling tomorrow. Weíll see if we make that deadline or if we have to push it back a day. Either way, we are definitely in the final stretch!

290185
With the EVO Manufacturing 4-inch Extreme Overlanding suspension system installed, we cycled the suspension and checked for clearance issues with the massive 42x14.50-17 Maxxis Trepedor tires.

290186
Weíre using MOPAR High Top fenders which give us a couple of additional inches of clearance around the wheel openings but still retain a factory look. No, thatís not a masking tape drive flange on the ProRock XD60. At this point, we had not assembled the front axle, so we just taped over the empty hub to keep debris out. One of our guys thought it would be clever to put a Dynatrac decal on it.

290187
With the suspension sorted out, we could take the axles out and get them over to welding and assembly to finish them up. Weíre using an Eaton ELocker in the XD60 front, along with 5.38 gears.

290188
With most of the mechanical work done, it was time to change the color. CODE1 is supposed to have an overlanding, rock crawler, military look to it when complete. So we are doing a Matte Military Green vinyl wrap on it.

290189
Now CODE1 is starting to look the part.

290190
Bestop customized a softop for us. This black canvas top has zip-out side panels that go the full length of the rear section Ė combining where the back door was and the factory rear-window section. Weíll be able to roll these up or remove them.

290191
Hereís the full side view so you can get a better idea of the overall look with the wheels, tires, MOPAR flares, long-wheelbase two-door and the canvas top.

290192
And the view from the front with the EVO bumper in place with the Warn ZEON Platinum winch and Baja Design LP9 LED off-road lights.

We should say that the concept of the top is to complete the long-wheelbase, 2-door overlander look. Yes, it limits visibility. Thankfully, the owner of Dynatrac drives an 18-wheeler, so he is really good at using mirrors. Interior photos and more vehicle info will come after weíre through the thrash of building the vehicle. Not sure weíll have an opportunity to weigh it, though.

That body came out beautifully...and amazingly quick to boot. As far as rearward visibility, nothing a rear facing camera wouldn't solve.

Not only is this an awesome build but it is really making me itch to see what the JL truck ends up being.

Right now I'm still planning to keep my JKU but I really need something with better towing capacity and that has a bed I can use to haul larger stuff instead of strapping lumber, metal gates, etc to the top of my jeep. If the top comes off the cab because that's the only excuse I have at this point, I might have to say goodbye to my beloved JKU.

Those are the Maxxis Trepador's (http://www.maxxis.com/catalog/tire-499-105-trepador-m8060). These are probably Fred's favorite tire as he uses them in a lot of his builds on his show Dirt Every Day. I've seen them in person and they are even more aggressive looking in real life. I believe they come in DOT Compliant or Competition aka stickies. I've heard they are loud as hell but handle extremely well on and off road.

We had to trim the MOPAR flares a little and a small amount of metal while checking our tire clearances. We left the sway bars connected for now. When we have more time to fine tune things, weíll disconnect them.

I've been meaning to ask, I don't know if there are programmers like the AEV and superchips out there already, is it safe to say thay the JL doesn't go into limp mode with different gear ratios like the JK did when you tried to run it with different gear ratios without reprogramming or at least turn on the Check Engine Light?
