Slow USB charge '18 JK Sport

Hi all,
I recently purchased a new JK unlimited. It's my third wrangler ('99 TJ, '07 JK), and I'm loving the new engine. Has anyone else noticed that your iPhone charges slower than normal when plugged into the armrest USB slot? It's substantially slower than the Silverado I just traded in. Wonder if I just need to use a car charger in the cigarette lighter instead?
Just curious if anyone else noticed this.

Glad to be back in the family again!

All FCA products that I’ve encountered charge very slow via the UConnect USB ports. I just stick a regular old car charger in there and it charges just fine.

Ah ok. Good to know! I'll go that route as well.

Also, great color jeep in your profile. That's the color I just got. Can't wait to spend some money on updating the look from stock.

Wait, a 2018 JK? I thought 2018 was the JL.

You need a quality 12v adaptor to charge fast. In my '15 there's a port inside the armrest and I have 2 cables, one for me, one for passenger.

There are still '18 JK's :thumb: I see them on car carriers on the PA turnpike daily.

There are different outputs of USB outlets and differences in cables as well. I installed two of these in my jeep in place of the factory cigarette lighter and that stupid ass hook on the other side of the console that's good for absolutely nothing. This outlet has a 4.2 amp charge and it works great.

Yep, like they said, there's one last JK run in '18. I decided to save a little cash and get a JK instead of a first year JL. I had the first year JK, which came with its fair share of issues, so it's nice to see the differences.

Thanks all for the advice on other USB options!

Is that more or less a plug/play option for the factory cigarette lighter? Just pop out the factory one and pop this in its place?

Well that's a nifty little unit, I will have to look into it.
As to stock USB, I don't know about the armrest one, but I believe the uconnect port is only 500mA, barely half what you need to charge a phone.

Not sure what radio you have but I added a cellular ipad in a Carrichs mount along with those USB outlets. One of them powers the ipad continuously and the other is for an aux GPS antenna.
I love it and use it more than the regular radio. The mount is a little pricey but man it's well worth it!

The install is post #558 on my build thread - here's link to that page: https://wayalife.com/showthread.php/31355-The-build-re-build-of-Gruff/page56

I’ll put it this way. I’m happy for you that it even works. I have had nothing but problems with the 430N in my ‘16 JKU. If it wasn’t a lease I’d rip it out and replace it.

Cool install Ddays. I like it. I too have an iPad set in a Carrich mount. I have the mini with the Retina display and it draws 2.4A. It could not keep up with even a 2.1A USB. A day on the trail, plugged in, drew down a fully charged unit.

My solution was similar but I drilled a hole next to the iPad and ran a short wire to it. Here is what mine looks like:

And here is a shot of it hooked up. The second wire runs to a Dual GPS. View attachment 295405

That's a nice setup. :thumb: I have to say I'm not a huge apple fan but I love having the iPad in the dash. One thing I really like is being able to input info WHILE YOU'RE MOVING! Its really annoying in my other vehicles trying to enter info in the nav and it cuts you off as soon as you start moving.
Want to hit EVERY stop light while its green? Try entering an address while you're in town!

What navy/map program do you run?

I am running Gaia. I love it. Couple it with a separate GPS, like Dual, and the iPad running Gaia and it will automatically select the strongest GPS signal. You are never out of range. I have All Charles Wells trails downloaded and displayable. You can have multiple overlays like topo’s and MVUM.

How about you, what are you running.

Ive got the Dual GPS as well. I have been using pocket earth but want to try the Gaia. I'm probably gonna download it before EJS and give it a try
