Got the Jeep back today. They never verified the concern. Talking with the tech, I feel he is very competent and spent a decent amount of time on it. After getting it back, I romped on it pretty hard, and it's working just fine. I need to get it up in the hills when hot to really test it and will see if it acts up. He did say that all of my clutch volume indexes were way out of spec and he did a relearn to fix that. It definitely shifts smoother, feels like a completely different vehicle. My guess is that in the mountains on Sunday, it was just too hot. And the shop never verified a burning smell, and I can't smell anything abnormal either :idontknow:

Well damn, I am pretty sure I was not hallucinating that day. Going to head up somewhere Sunday, not sure where yet, but you are welcome if you want to tag along.

Jeep is still acting up. I'm starting to think it's driveability related. Under load it only goes to about 3k rpm then no power at all. Even in town. Now if you accelerate slowly, everything is fine. As far as Sunday, I appreciate the offer, but I think we're staying home this weekend. I definitely want to get out soon though.

Does it seem like the timing advance is not working? Just brainstorming here.

Hard to say, but all that stuff is electronically controlled now. No distributor, just coils, pcm, and cam and crank sensor.

Our modern technology allows us to hook up to the system and record events as they happen, depicting what sensors are out of spec from normal as they happen. Problem is, finding someone with the right equipment to capture these events. I know you are aware of this and hope you can find someone with this equipment. Dealers for sure, but doesn't mean they have anyone that knows how to use it. Sensors would show codes, but other parameters might not. Thinking MAP sensor.

In Colorado, your vehicle registration covers that and it's not needed for a passenger vehicle. From what I understand, a quad or side by side does need one.

Good to know. On that note, I was amazed at how many of those rigs we saw on the trail last weekend at Hackett/Longwater.! Crazy how that lead rider did not notice us (a group of seven Jeeps) coming down on Hackett river crossing!! He almost made it real stupid.....

We’re about to give Rollins pass/Moffat tunnel a try. Just got my Jeep a couple of months ago and this seems like a good trail to begin with. Any thoughts? Has anyone been up there recently?

Check with the Forest service to see if it's open. I bet it's still snowy up there.

Hello again, long time :) Sorry I've missed a bunch of runs and meetups, life just got in the way!

Jack (H8ROADS) and I are planning on running what we can of Red Elephant Hill, Mill Creek and Bill Moore Lake, this Saturday (5/12/18). We will be meeting at the Downieville Starbucks at 9am.

999 Co Rd 308, Dumont, CO 80436

The plan is to see how far we can get as there may still be snow towards the top of Bill More lake.

I know its short notice, and people may have other commitments with Mothers Day being this weekend, but anyone is welcome to join.

This is not correct, but the fact is we hardly ever go on trails that require the permit. I have one, but I’ve literally never used it. A portion of the permit goes to a lot of good organizations and worthy causes which is why I buy one.

Heard you bought a new house with large garage. Good for Jeeps!!! I first ran this trail last year, and loved it. Lots of tight squeezes through the trees. Count me in.

I can't make this one. Have plans already. Have fun out there.

I was not aware of that. Funny thing is, my post earlier was information given to me by a forest ranger, lol.

Well, I think the Jeep is fixed. Stupidest simple thing too. My custom intake rubber boot was collapsing under load starving the engine of air. It must have gotten hot enough under the hood that day to soften that boot and it eventually fully collapsed.

How I found it: The tranny shop had it for 3 days and couldn't find anything wrong nor could they verify the symptom. The night I picked it up, it was fine. The next day, I noticed it acting up but wasn't as bad as before. The day i did the gears on the JK, my wife had the WJ. She noticed under easy or moderate acceleration, it was fine, but under heavy acceleration, it wouldn't pull. So a few days later, we took it back to the shop. They checked fuel pressure under load, checked for intake leaks, all was good. They did verify the symptom but said it wasn't transmission related and basically said it was out of their realm. I was happy with the time they spent on it though.
So I picked it up this afternoon with a hunch that it was my catalytic converter. It felt like that Everytime it did it. But the cat is only a year old. Did a little reading online and found a few cases of people damaging a cat after a deep water crossing, basically it cools too quickly and cracks then plugs. I have a good OEM cat at home so it wouldn't cost me anything to swap. The Jeep acted up several times on the way home. However, when I got the Jeep home, I decided to hit the throttle hard while in park and look at some things. I noticed immediately the intake boot was collapsing a little. The more I opened the throttle quickly, the more the intake collapsed. So I took the whole thing off and put a cone filter right on the throttle body. We took both jeeps up the mountain about 15 miles and I drove it hard. Never acted up once. Oh, and my power is stronger and gas mileage indicator increased by 3 on the display. Sounds like I've had this going on for awhile, just finally the tube softened enough to leave me stranded.
An expensive lesson. Thank you all who hung out and tried to help last weekend and for Ben driving my wife and kids home while I waited for the tow truck. We could have fixed this thing up there in about 30 seconds.
My next plan is to find an OEM intake system and install it. However I will have to build a custom washer bottle and relocate it.

Sucks that it was such an easy fix and still ended up being an expensive lesson. Oh well, at least you're free and clear again.
