Why no hard tops?

As usual, you guys crushed it with well thought out opinions and ideas. Thank you.

So when ordering my JK, what about getting the dual top group? Would anyone recommend the color matching hard top? I see a lot of hard tops where they look pretty worn out.

I would say if you want the hardtop then get that and just pick up an used softtop on Craigslist for cheap. Or a trektop. As for color matched I would say don't bother. Kind of a waste of money in my opinion.

Hey Nevada, get the soft top. Skip the hard. Storing it seems like s huge PITA & you'll be bummed you can't get it off yourself. I run top down with a spiderweb shade as much as I can. It's been 92+ degrees for like 2 months straight. The shade will keep you cool & you can pop the top back up in 5 minutes if it rains. You don't have to take off the spiderweb shade to put the top up. Win win.

Thank you. I am looking at an aftermarket soft top option. I like the looks of the Trektop line. Maybe I will get that as financed instead of the stock one, which I am guessing is over priced? I could be wrong.

However, with the heavy snows at my doorstep (I live at 5,200 feet), a hard top is a necessity. I have a perfect place for the hard top ceiling mounting in the garage.

So at this point, looking at getting both. I am so glad I received all of your suggestions and ideas! Thank you.

My soft top held 4' of snow this winter fine. :yup:

I'm down in Carson City and spend a lot of time up in Tahoe - in fact, I'm up there now. All my Jeeps have come with hard tops and I have sold them all. Running a soft top in the snow really isn't as bad as you're thinking but, having both isn't such a bad thing either.

I believe you have the proper idea going for you. I live in WI and we get some pretty heavy snow in the winters. My trektop would not hold up to it. It's my favorite top and I would love to run it year round but that's not feasible. Go with the hardtop for winter and trektop for summer. I store my hardtop on a dolly so it's easy to move around. Plus in the winter the hardtop insulates a little better than my softtop.

I just got rid of my factory hard top, and sold it on craigslist for 1600, and got a great deal on a new Trektop NX for $300. It gave me 1300 dollars to put towards other mods, and so far I'm happy with it. I live in Arizona, and it gets to 115 degrees here, so I did buy a headliner, which reduced noise, and keeps the heat out a bit better than without. Once summer is over, I'll have the windows out, with the bikini part still on till it gets hot or rains. I love driving without the windows and doors when I can, especially on the trail. No matter the weather, I always remove the windows just so they don't get scratched up.

I may stand corrected. If you need all the hardware on top of the cost of the soft top, I am seeing the cost at almost 1K. I also like the look of the trek top, but the purchase is on hold for now.

I agree. I have ran my soft top 3 winters and a hard top for one, and I don't think it's a big deal.

The ONLY thing I don't like about my Trektop NX in the winter is how stiff the rear window and zippers get. Otherwise just as warm as my hardtop.

I have the duel tops from the factory and run both. I like the hard top in the late fall through early spring. Though I don't see a huge problem running a soft top in the winter, other then getting into the back is a PITA with the rear window installed. It's even worse when it's cold.

Trek tops are nice, but you lose storage space with the slant back.

i run my hard top 99% of the time, but i have to admit i do love my JK with the soft top! and will be running it in summer but IMO i would order both as i like to have the choice between the two :thumb:

Those are awesome shots Eddie. Being just 45 minutes north of you, I can say that those shots indicate a very weak outpouring of snow. I have been here since 2005 and we have had only 2-3 big winters. In the last few years, they have been pretty darn lame. With El Nino looking good, I might think that we will see the almighty mother and get hammered. I will be backcountry skiing of course, but hey, by the time I get my JK, the snow should be somewhat settled.

BTW, which top is Rubi-Cat sporting?

As for the other comments, thank you. I see that the dual top option is nice. I really like the color matching one, but see where the hard top in black looks good also. As for the factory top, no bueno. I really like me the aftermarket options from Trektop. (is that correct?

Again, you guys are awesome.
