Dodged a Bullet!

Hey folks! A little background first: Purchased a 2016 JK Rubicon about a week ago. Lot's of options included...two major options being a dealer-installed AEV 3.5" suspension, tires, wheels, hood, etc. The other option was a RIPP Supercharger (V3). The Jeep had 651 miles on it when I purchased it (Sales Manager drove it). Took it home and drove it normally for a couple of days before heading out of town for an event in Indianapolis. While driving up there I noticed the Jeep would hesitate on occasion when I accelerated....same thing coming back home (rained the entire way up and back). Got into my garage and popped the hood. First thing I noticed was the K&N filter positioned directly under the AEV hood vent (I know...so is the alternator...)

Called RIPP and spoke with tech. support (great guys BTW!). The first thing the support guy asked me was if I had changed the oil in the SC. He said the oil needs to be changed after the first 500 miles of use (remember...I bought it off the dealer with 651 miles). Called the dealership and they confirmed they had not changed the oil in the SC. I was given two bottles of the SC oil when I took the Jeep home. Found RIPP's excellent video on changing the oil in the SC and proceeded to do so. I video'd what came out of the drain line, but the video is too large to post here. When I cracked the plug on the SC oil drain line I initially got about two tablespoons of water. I removed the plug and got what I will call..."Pepto Bismol"...a bright pink liquid. Note - the SC oil is a magenta-colored liquid. I should have gotten something close to that coming out. Luckily, I had the two extra bottles of SC oil, so I finished draining it, and then emptied one of the bottles in the SC. Ran it for approximately 20 minutes and drained it. A little less pink. Filled it back up with the last bottle of SC oil and have been having it sit until my extra bottles come from RIPP. Plan on draining and filling until what I put in the SC comes out the same color.

Today I spoke to RIPP tech. support (Chris) and outlined my plan. He mentioned there was another piece of the SC to take into consideration - the vent plug.

Vent Plug

This plug is on the other side of the SC from the dipstick. It's simple purpose is to keep the SC from blowing out the internals. BUT...water can pool around the lip and get sucked into the internals (bearings, etc.). Again...this sits directly under the AEV hood vent.

The main thing is that the SC is working just fine. No metal shavings came out of the drain line. No weird noises from the SC. Thought I might have had water intrusion into the motor (rain into the filter and pushed in by the SC), so I drained the engine oil and found nothing...no weird milky-white color...just regular old oil.

As it stands my options are:

1. Replace the hood (ain't happening...more later)
2. Replace the SC filter (ordered the 3.6L Sealed Airbox System from RIPP designed specifically for folks running an AEV hood)
3. Manufacture a cover for the SC vent plug (already drawing up a plan)
4. Seal the AEV hood vent (need to find heat-retardant material)

Moral of the story - look under the hood of your Jeep BEFORE you take it home from the dealer...I'm an idiot for not doing that.

There's another thread trending about a hydrolocked motor with a CAI. Once you get the air box you should be good. I think there's some kind of a K&N dust hood you can put over that thing too.

Or get the snorkel! Win win.

I would figure out a way to seal the hood. There are actual drip trays for hood vents out there. They go right under the vent and direct the water where you want it to go, but air can still do its thing for cooling. You can buy or build. Common on the XJs.

Both great ideas...although not a fan of the snorkel...thanks you guys!
