Old School Cool

It was 2002 for me. A 65" Sony rear projection HDTV (1080) that was enormous and weighed a ton. At the time, it cost just shy of $5000.

Similar to mine in 2002. The one I bought was a Sony" rear projection 4:3 aspect ratio (1080). At the time most TV was in that format and I didn't want the black bars or stretched picture to fit 16:9 "wide screen" cost close to $2k. Picked up a 65" Samsung 3D smart TV in 2013 for a bit less than I paid for that and could now get a 75" 4k Samsumg for around $700 from Costco. Didn't mention the 32" RCA tube TV I bought in 99 or 2000...haha.

old school cool in the 70's / 80's was watching cartoons on Saturday mornings till 11 or so and eating a big bowl of cereal (insert your choice of Capt'n Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Frosted Flakes, Count Chockula, etc). Then going outside playing sports, riding our BMX bikes, walking the train tracks behind our house shooting crows / blackbirds with BB / pellet guns, snowball fights, playing war, etc. Coming home for dinner and heading back out to play hide n seek, ding dong ditch, throwing rocks at the bats flying overhead and dodging the rocks coming back to earth. End the day watching SNL.

Sunday mornings were meant for watching Abbot and Costello and the 3 stooges (never got into the little rascals), and building plastic model kits from Revell, Monogram, AMT or playing with HO trains and building layouts. Can't tell you how many years my dad would take 3 or 4 of us from our street to train shows at the Detroit light guard armory and other places a few times a year. We also had a couple of big outdoor shows we'd goto to get all of the latest and greatest new fishing gear for the upcoming seasons we spent on the water at our cottage. We saved our allowances each year to get the best new crankbaits, rubber worms, plastic baits, etc and if we saved enough we could get a new rod or reel.

I distinctly remember at 1 Outdoorama at the Michigan State Fairgrounds, when the ugly stick came out in 1976, my dad and my neighbors dad took myself and his 2 sons to the event and we went into a vendors both and grabbed a brand new ugly stick and bent it over from tip to handle and it BROKE. We were so scared that we were in so much trouble and had to pay for the rod, but the vendor said that was the first time they ever said they saw 1 break and they were cool with it. Told us we didn't owe them a thing.

After school weekdays was spent watching Godzilla, Johnny Sako and his giant robot, and Ultraman. Then playing fun games on Intellivision or Atari 2600 or even playing Castle Wolfenstein on a Commodore 64.

We were blessed to have our 1 street in our subdivision that had 15 kids within 3 years of each other and all of our parents were teachers / administrators in the same school district. So it was a very tight nit group. Sleepovers were common and rotated at each other houses during the weekends. Trips to our cottage and others during the summer were also a common occurrence.

The downside of that, was we could never get away with anything at school. If one of us got in trouble, everyone knew it and you couldn't hide it.

Growing up in the 70's and 80's sure was special. I still have all my HO train stuff from and many of my models from back in the day.
