2013 Overland Expo Photo Highlights

Since I first heard about it a few years back, I have been wanting to attend the Overland Expo and see what it was all about. Certainly, as anyone who knows me knows, I love gadgets and innovative equipment that can help out on the trail and figured, if anyone would have it, they would. Well, I finally got a chance to make it out this year and, while I did have a great time making new friends and doing some wheeling out in the Sedona area, I must say that I was a bit disappointed in the show itself. While I did see some cool refrigerators, a powerful solar power blanket and a kitchen solutions or two, I can't say that I saw a whole lot more than that or, at least in terms of what the average Joe could really use and or afford. All jokes aside, I didn't even see too many, if any, companies soliciting stereotypical snorkels or roof racks or even recovery equipment. What I did see a lot of were crazy huge and expensive off-road motor homes, trailers and kitchen sets. Seriously, if I were new to all this and didn't know anything about "overlanding", I would have thought that the term was just another way of saying, "camping for rich people". Not that there's a problem with that and, not that I wasn't impressed with what I saw but, that's about all I got out of it. Having said all that, here are a few pics that I took while at the 2013 Overland Expo. I hope you enjoy.

I know some of you will think I'm crazy but, I'm actually a fan of Sportmobiles and if I had to do the RV thing, one of these is probably what I would have gotten. There were a bunch of these at the show...

If you're looking for more creature comforts, something like one of these might be a better fit...

Here's a pop-up solution...
main.php

main.php

How about we SUPERSIZE things...
main.php

main.php

It's even available in sparkley colors and graphics...
main.php

main.php

SUPERSIZE x2...
main.php

main.php

main.php

Need something to survive the zombie apocalypse, maybe one of these would fit the bill...
main.php

main.php

I think this would be a bit more my style...
main.php

main.php

Of course, for those of you wanting something a bit more down to earth, there were a few of the Nemo pop up solutions. Still costs an arm but maybe not a leg as well...
main.php

I actually thought that this pop-up hard shell rocket box like design was kind of cool - better than the traditional tent like design...
main.php

main.php

main.php

main.php

Another hard shell design...
main.php

Speaking of more traditional roof top tents....

Of course, when I think "overlander", this is what comes to my mind...

Don't want a roof top tent, don't worry, there are TONS of trailer solutions available too...

Still want a trailer solution but want something a little more refined? This is what you might be looking for...

Check it out!! This 1's got a little bit of everything and was made specifically for Moby!!

Even comes with coil suspension and shocks...

But, if you'd rather live more like a nomad and house a small village, maybe a yurt is what you're looking for...
main.php

Need something a bit smaller?
main.php

How about this, too small?
main.php

Oops, I mean "poops" - this is what the last tent was for...
main.php

This shower kit for it was pretty cool or, should I say, HOT...
main.php

There were a bunch of kitchen solutions like this (cue the music) Transformer - more than meets the eye...
main.php

I actually really liked this solar blanket...
main.php

At only 17 lbs. and can roll up into this small bag, it was an impressive find - my personal favorite at the show...
main.php

But, with a $2200 price tag, I started looking at some of the more affordable and less powerful solutions...
main.php

Some rolled up into nice little packages like this...
main.php

They are super expensive but I swear by my ARB fridge. Here's another made by Engel that's just as expensive but, in some ways, nicer...
main.php

main.php

Smaller tote size fridge...
main.php

Okay, before wrapping things up, let's go back to rigs - if there was a favorite of mine, it would have to be either this...
main.php

main.php

main.php

Or this just because it's so cute...
main.php

main.php

But most likely this!!

Oh yeah - can you say BADASS

Well, that's all I've got. Yes, there was a neat obstacle course, classes and even movies being shown but, Cindy and I decided that we'd rather go wheeling and, that's exactly what we ended up doing instead. I hope you enjoyed the pics :yup:

Cool pics! I was bummed I couldn't make it as I really wanted to attend and share my overlanderness. :cheesy:

By seriously I really wanted to go.

That exo cage looks clean on the land rover. Some of those rv and campers are super sick. Great for a trailered rig or taking your boat to the lake or river. You can launch from some gnarly locations. I used to camp and launch from a sand bowl south of Blythe called hippie hole that required 4x4. Guys would bring their quads and boats....freaking sweet. Something like these rigs would have been great. Thanks for the pics :thumb:

I am so buying some khaki cargo pants and long sleeve shirts to go wheeling in. :cheesy:

Cool photos. I think this stuff is cool. I'll likely never buy it, but it is fun to look at. Thanks for sharing. Saved me a trip to Gregor the Overlander territory.

I definitely have to agree with Eddie on this one. It wasn't what I expected as a first time guest and most the stuff there was too expensive for the average person to even buy but some cool and creative stuff out there for sure

Hey Austin, it was great meeting you at the show!

...

"overland" is for suckers!

;)

You know it!! :D In all seriousness, I was kinda hoping you were going to be out there.

I'm pretty sure you're only a fan of the Sportmobiles because you know they have Dynatrac's under them :cheesy:

:cheesy: Ya got me. I think a few even have Atlas transfer cases too :D

Great Pics Eddy, I was going to go the trailer route eventually. Some of them gave me some great Ideas...

I definitely would do the trailer route over a roof top tent. I've really looked into a Tentrax in the past and was hoping they would have been out at the show. Oh well.

I would like to build a trailer some day.., it need a keg tap and bar built in
