Agreed, drive up to Yosemite, check out mariposa grove. It's a couple hours drive but worth it.

I don't really have a whole lot of free time but I am debating on Yosemite or the sequoia forest, which would you guys recommend is the better of the two?

How about the best of both and go to Yosemite and hit Mariposa grove just like piginajeep said. Its a grove of Sequoia trees. Then you can see El capitan and half dome and maybe Bridalveil falls will have some watter running. Beautiful!
