On my JE-Reel shaft, I received it with a cracked dust shield and put it together expecting it to not matter but it actually caused fluid to leak out between the shield and the yoke. Called JE-Reel and asked them about it and said that crack might be the cause of the leak and sent me another yoke. Put the new yoke on and it stopped leaking. Kinda an odd situation but my understanding is like everybody else is saying is that it shouldn't matter if you have one or not.
