JL Master cylinder cap failure

After a simple trip yesterday, this morning i found that the cap was sitting strange so after taking closer look i found teh failure.
Not sure how long it is been like this. Ordered teh new one yet i am curious what may have happened?

Looks to me like someone broke it by not getting it on right and left it there. Weird.
