My wife grew up in the Canal Zone from 1964 to 1976…her dad was a Canal Pilot, and later become the Harbor Master. Her childhood friend, who was born in the Canal Zone, decided to bring her mother’s ashes back to Panama to rest with her father who was buried there.

Initially, it was supposed to be a “ ladies only” trip with all of the friends that grew up here…but by the time the trip was formed, several of them had to drop out leaving only my wife, her friend and her friends daughter…that’s when they asked me to accompany them. After some thought, I said yes…but I would be bringing a couple fly rods…

Coming in to Panama City, you can see all the ships lining up to transverse the Canal from the Pacific Ocean…

We stayed in Casco Viejo, which was the original old city at a hotel in the Plaza de Herrera…these are the views from our hotel balcony…

Panama has several excellent things to put on your mouth…amongst them is their coffee and ceviche, made from corvina

The railway station building where they used to take the train to Colon, on the Caribbean coast…it is now a McDonald’s…

These were the buildings for the residents of the Canal Zone…they didn’t have bars on the windows back then. The Canal Zone was similar to a military base back in the day…

This area is a wildlife preserve…these are Guinea fowl…I have packets of these feathers in different colors on my fly tying bench…
