Is it just the wood causing the problem? Here in Michigan you’re never supposed to bring wood with you, supposed to get it at your destination to stop the tree killing invasive species.

This is correct. Most places we camp are fairly close to the house, therefore we aren’t bringing any species that aren’t already there. When we go out of state, we always buy wood from the destination area to abide by that rule. It can get very expensive to buy in small amounts, when I can get a whole cord locally for $80-$100, compared to a dollar a stick at most commercial sites.
