Pardon my ignorance, but if you break a rear driveshaft, why can't you remove it and run in 4hi and get home in front wheel drive? Will the fluid blow out of the transfer case from the missing shaft?

You'd still have the transfer case yoke in place, preventing you from losing fluid. If your question is coming from WOL telling someone to plug the axle he is talkiing about the axle shaft.

Assuming you're already off the trail, there is no reason why yoou couldn't do this. In fact, I have done it and on more than one occasion. It's getting off the trail without 4WD that can be tricky.

Gotcha. A lot of east coast wheeling is in off road parks so if you break, there's usually an easy option to get back to the parking lot. Out in the wilderness, that's a different story.
