If that question was for me, I had a helper (my wife) pull on the end of the line as I wound it in. Might not be ideal, but the winch still pulls the jeep out just fine.

Winchlines need to be wound in under tension or the top most layer will pinch down to the drum when using it and become impossible to pull by hand or kink. Here's a couple vids, just hook the jeep to something solid and wind in nicely. And a video of how to repack nasty planetary gears.

Great vids. After using my winch I (nearly) always re-load it under tension in this way so it comes off easy when I need it. Bugs the dickens out of me when I need to pull it out and things are all bound up. I should probably switch to synthetic, also. And it seems like I'm always doing stupid stuff, so I have to use that winch WAY too often!
