Black Bear Pass... too much hype?

Thats a really old warn advertisement that gets shared around alot, if you look closely you can see all the photoshops in it. Its been doctored. pretty good for back in the day though.

You can mainly tell just by looking at the right side of the trail, look how straight it is.

This photo was brought up in alot of other photography forums, an no one is even sure if thats truly black bear pass.

Don't take this from us. I plan on showing my children, and my children's children, and my children's children's children this photo and then tell them their great grand pappy drove that trail in his old 2014 Rubicon. Don't take this from us.

The photo is real. It's black bear pass. We all get to tell our kids.

A few buddies and myself took a trip to Telluride this past July to specifically do Black Bear. One of the guys with us broke his Jeep going up Engineer pass, and the next day when everyone else went to do Black Bear Pass, I volunteered to drive him to Durango to get parts. While I wasn't able to do it, it still looks terrifying and for sure not for someone (like me) who doesn't like heights. I wish I could have gone and done it, but I couldn't leave someone behind while the rest of us went to have fun. While I hear it's not technically challenging, the pucker factor is incredibly high. Engineer Pass was enough for me :)

On a side note; if you're ever in Telluride, check out The Cornerhouse Grill. The food is amazing!

The hype is certainly bigger than the trail but it needs to be! People still drive off of it even though it has been widened!
There are way to many people with 4X4s that have no idea where they are in space. There are so many people with
ZERO experience running the trails in the San Juan's they need to keep the hype up to try and scare them off.

Its really not that difficult of a trail. I was there a couple of years ago when a jeep rolled off the side (luckily everyone was ok) but it was completely driver error. Its more scenic that anything I guess

Try hitting the second switchback and have your break pedal go to the floor, You might think different!
Haven't done BBP so not to discredit it but I am pretty sure that problem can apply to nearly any trail that has a possibility of injury or death.

Not a technically difficult trail but the danger factor is there. That caused me some serious pucker factor when it happened. Did not say a word to my wife because I was scared she would freak!

The one weekend out of the year it is open to run in reverse would definitely add to the complexity and be a blast. I would love to be there for it.

I did the black bear backwards event this year.
It was a great experience.
I think going up was a bit more challenging than down.

The event is organized by a jeep club called the wild bunch out of Montrose Colorado.
They may not run the event again due to increased hassles with getting the permits and whatnot.

Did Black Bear Pass Sep 2016, hit the trail about 8:30 am, when I reached the top of the pass it started snowing real hard, with strong winds. This blizzard lasted a good 15 minutes. My wife and I were the only vehicle up there that we could see. When it cleared up, we continued on in light snow and sleet. We made it with no problems although the "steps" were exciting in the wet/icy conditions. The next day we learned that they closed the pass after we were already up there. Now I know why we were all alone. IMG_0049.JPG

This is supposedly a photograph of Black Bear Pass. If so, it was once, really treacherous. It isn't now, but it is very beautiful, and if you are in the area, you should do it. You can get a badge for it, and several trails in the area, from the Jeep Badge of Honor program.

At any rate, Black Bear was apparently once that narrow.

Sounds like a cool experience. Glad you were able to run it. I'd like to someday.

It's more about how beautiful it is, than how technically difficult it is. The first little bit down, was kind of hair raising, to me. It's steep, and doesn't look wide enough for your tires. My wife told me, "If you move over anymore, you'll knock off the mirror!" I said I didn't care, I could but another mirror.
