Rusty’s vs EVO hinged tire carrier

Just finished the Rusty's carrier install last night. I'n really happy with it. This is a very well made carrier. The fit is great and the PC finish is top notch. We'll see how that finish holds up over time but of all the shot I've bought for my Jeeps, this is the best PC job I've seen from an aftermarket company. Instructions were pretty good too.
I've not seen an EVO carrier in person but honestly can't believe that it's nicer than this one. I'd highly recommend this to anyone considering a body mounted carrier for their Jeep.

Looks good! How was the install? Been debating going with this carrier since I saw it in this thread

Not bad at all. Really straightforward. The only thing that isn't a simple bolt on is there are 4 optional mounting screws on the far left hand side of the carrier that you have to use nutserts for and also you need one for the tailgate tether
on the inside of the body. Other than that it's really simple. Honestly, for as well made as this is I'm surprised at the cost. These are a damn good deal

That’s awesome Jerry, it looks great. I’ve seen and helped install the EVO and this one looks every bit as good or better.

Bubba isn't set up with them (yet :idontknow:) and Quadratec was out of them so I ended up buying direct from Rusty's.

Another nice thing I forgot to mention - these are shipped foamed in place in the box, so there is no way for these to get damaged in shipment.

I have to say that the Rusty's carrier looks to be well thought out and maybe even a better way to go.

Any issues with lining up the gate itself after the install so it closes properly?

Good point. Mine does drop ever so slightly when you open it but it's not something I'm concerned enough with to tear it back apart. They give you two shims to use on the upper hinge frame mount depending on the weight of your combination. I'm using my old Chamber Pros with 37" STT Pros and since this carrier is rated to carry 40's I figured I'd only use one of the shims. But in hindsight I probably should have used both. If I ever need to take this off for some reason I'll stick the other shim on there.

Edit: I had zero issued lining the tailgate up. SInce you leave it latched when mounting the carrier that really shouldn't be a concern. I put masking tape on the opening side and it never budged.

Did you have any issues with your 35s on your stock tire carrier?

Other than finding a way to get the isolators to press firmly against the sidewall of the spare, I can't say that I had any problems carrying a 37 on my stock tire carrier with a relocation bracket. Granted, a carrier like this or the EVO one do make it feel a lot more solid.

No, exactly what Eddie said. I was going to just go with the stock carrier but when I put the lift on I tried the 37's on it and, well, the 35's are in the garage stacked up for now. :rolleyes2:
Honestly it was more of a security thing. Driving cross country next week (my daughter is driving this Jeep) and doing who knows what in Moab, I figured better safe than sorry.

I'm currently running 37 on stock carrier with no relocation bracket, bumper removed, it's fine driving around town but Everytime I'm even on a bumpy fire road the thing sounds like it's going to go all terrorflex and fly off, so Id say you made the right choice by upgrading before your trip

So the Rusty's carrier I installed on the JL worked out perfect on the trip out West. I followed it around a lot and the tire barely moved around at all, even on the really rocky trails. I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for an aftermarket carrier for their JL. :thumb:
