In The Shop - Disciple Off Road

I think it has been brought up or asked several times regarding the use of cam bolts for caster adjustment or going from a cam bolt back to a standard bolt.

Well, this is what it looks like after cam bolts have been installed….You can clearly see why a standard bolt will now not work. This is also why it is recommended to install adjustable control arms over cam bolts.

I know that look........

Full disclosure, because I never told you what I found.

Drivers knuckle, lower ball joint location. There was a vertical crack on the outside radius of the inner side. When putting weight on and then taking weight off the crack would open and close. The ball joint would also "flex" sideways like shown in your video.

For anyone questioning what I did to cause this, the driver front tire took separate impacts on different occasions, almost straight into the tire. Drove the front of the JT about 3' off of the street into the yard.

We had a customer come in experiencing bad death wobble after a wheeling trip and this is what we found. This shows how the JL/JT aluminum knuckles can fail. The clip starts with the tire jacked up off of the ground, lowing it and then back up. You can see the lateral movement and gap where the aluminum knuckle at the ball joint opened up.

this is why I replaced the knuckles on my JL, thought it was bad ball joints, turned out to be the knuckle.

Duct tape on the ball joint shaft to fill the hole out should work fine. Save your customer some money too.
