I know this has been internetted to death but what are y'all running. I know tolerances have changed through the years but..... Not looking to solve the mystery, just looking for honest opinions.

I will need to do my first soon. Has 45,000 miles. No idea what previous owner used.

Let’s not be silly here. They absolutely do. Oil is one of thee most debated topics amongst all car enthusiasts. Greater even than the Snap-On vs Harbor freight fight of the early aughts.

Personally. I run whatever the hell oil I have on the shelf when I do an oil change. Regardless of what the cap says. (It’s usually pretty close tho or the actual recommended weight)
Further, I absolutely do not do what the manufacturer recommends. Those dumb dicks want you to go till the idiot light or oil meter tells you when to change your oil. Not the look, smell or mileage and or heavy use trends over that time.

To the OP. Check and change often. Don’t sweat the fine print.

I think the key word here is, "enthusiasts". A vast majority of vehicle owners are anything but or at least, from what I have seen. Most barely know that they should change their oil at all let alone on a regular basis.

I will make the point that there is much less to be enthusiastic of now than there used to be. How can one really be enthused about something with so many complex software and electronic controls?

The core essence of the car/truck has changed a lot during my lifetime.
