Dana 30 and 37's?

no one will FLAME you or anyone for what they choose to do with their rig and what works for them. What we regulars, mods, and Admin will flame EVERYONE for is, recommending the above mentioned set-up to a newbie or someone asking for a solid/worry free build plan. Just as you said, its not optimal, but you've made it work.

Hell, Drew at ORE ran 37's for a few years on a D30 open. He babied it without a failure, but I can Guarantee that he will never recommend that set-up to anyone UNLESS its stricktly a road/show Jeep. I know a guy who can tight rope across the skyscrapers and has done it without a safety net, but I wouldnt recommend that you do it! ;)

I realize that was gonna add a side note to the haters, Eddie knows what I'm running and even though he doesn't recommend or care for this setup we still talk lol imagine that. Was basically making reference towards all the haters lately.

Just to clarify.... The earl link on a D30 is the ring n pinion? Even w/ chromoly axle shafts n ARB locker it's still a very weak set up frm what I understand even if the JK's a much lighter 2 door

The difference in weight between a 2-door Sport and a 4-door Sport is only about 300 lbs. This is according to the official spec sheet. Where you see a measurable difference in weight is when comparing a 2-door Sport with a manual trans mission and a 4-door Rubicon with an automatic. At that point, you are looking at about a 600 lb spread. Point being, the comparison isn't relative enough to make a difference. In the end, your ring and pinion will be the weakest link, even on a 2-door.

I see alot of people asking the question - is it safe to run 37's on a Dana 30? How about 35's? What if I truss and gusset?

Well this Dana 30 had it all- chromo shafts, truss, gussets, and locked.

And only running 33's

I think what is being overlooked is that this is a lunch box locker. When you take the spider gears out of the carrier and put in the locker it puts too much stress on the carrier itself and by the looks of that pic, that is what failed, the carrier. I've seen it happen on several occasions and have done it myself. I won't run a lunch box locker because of that.

I have completely stock Dana 30 and 37" krawlers. I think mine's lasted as long as it has because I am still running 3.21s #itsgutless

I am currently running 37s on my dana 30 with 5.13 gears and a locker. I am always scared with it but just don't have the money for something better.

I sure do. During the summer/spring I was going up to the hills a couple times a week. Brought it with us to SoCal over the summer though and couldn't find many trails nearby

In all fairness, everyone has their own idea of what "wheeling" is or how "hard", hard really is. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I think qualifying your response with photos and or names of trails would help others to understand how it's possible for your axle to last when there's no way someone like me could get one to.

There's none down there, you didn't miss anything :spy:

:cheesy: Nope, none at all.

I am running a D30 with 35's, 3.21 gears, stock shafts and no gussets.....As said before gutless but its what I have for now until I figure out what I want. And yes I have wheeled it but not as hard as a lot of people and I can get away with a D30 for awhile with the wheeling I do but if I ever move up it will fail!!!

I run 37" nitto trail grapplers on an open dana 30 with 4:88's. Been through the rubicon twice with no problems and once through the Old Sluice, again no problems. Not even a tug or winch was needed either. Now, i really baby my stuff though and i dont have really heavy beadlocks like say ATX Slabs but none the less my wheels and tires are still pretty heavy. Also, as soon as funding allows i will be getting a PR up front just so i can run lockers.

This is a pic from the Old sluice.

In all fairness, if you run it the normal direction, the Old Sluice is all down hill. Still a tough obstacle and that is a great shot but, not really something that would put an open Dana 30 to the test. I too have wheeled my old 2007 JK with an open Dana 30 through the Rubicon and without issue. Unlike some, I applaud your desire to play with what you've got until it breaks or until you can afford to replace what you have with something better - this, as opposed to suggesting that a Dana 30 is plenty strong and all you'll ever need because of how you drive.

Edit: also my d30 is sleeved and gusseted but has stock shafts.

A bent housing won't stop you from finishing up the trail. Without lockers, the odds of breaking a shaft is a lot less. 4.88 gears leaves you with a strong enough pinion to keep you going as well.

Yes, i would never install a locker up front in my 30.
