We can stay anywhere. I wouldn't mind checking out the Ouray or Silverton area. The only thing we know is that we would prefer to camp.

Not sure if you ever received a response... Ouray is beautiful. The rig with 33s and open diff will be able to do everything in the area. Even Poughkeepsie (the most difficult trail in the area) can be accomplished without lockers and the right line. It is far more scenic than it is difficult.

Loving the info in this thread. We will be camping in the telluride/ ouray area in a month. Does anyone know of any good camping spots? I've researched a ton and have come up with a few but don't want to drive around all day striking out.

OK, next month could (will) be snowy at higher elevations still.
And I talked with a buddy who lives down that way and is always getting out there.
This info he gave me some folks that are heading down latter this summer.

If you want to be close to T-ride take Dallas divide road...it drops into Telluride from Ridgway (Dallas divide) or head up Imogene pass....or...Ouray or Ridgway for campgrounds
.

You'll still have some snow fields up high that time of year although the runoff seams to be a bit ahead of schedule. Try the campground on Oak Street in Ouray. It's clean, great showers, right along the river so great sleeping! Also central to all trails in the area. Plus the Hot Springs pool is being completely rebuilt so that should be awesome after a day on the trails!

A few friends of mine and myself did some primitive camping just outside of Silverton near the Alpine Loop last July. We ended up heading to Ouray for a night at the Western Hotel; that was an experience to say the least. That place is totally haunted... I paid for a room and didn't even end up staying in it because I was too scared lol. The last night in Ouray before leaving to head to Denver, we stayed at the Ouray KOA so we could be close to the hot springs - and have showers. That was a really nice campground if you're looking to go that route, but nothing beats primitive camping in the mountains.

Good luck and have fun!

:cheesy:

I had 3 of my co-workers riding with me, two of which are locals. They asked if I knew how to drive in the snow.

I just laughed and said, guess we're gonna find out!

We got hit with a massive snow storm yesterday. We went up to explore today and to see how deep the snow was. Over 3 feet in spots. Beautiful though. Even got on one forest road that was plowed and got drove around a little. But the best part of the day was seeing a bear eating a carcass of something. All my years in CO, and this is the first bear I've seen.

That's insane. Beautiful but insane.
