My CJ is a 4 speed manual with a granny first. I can take off from a dead stop in 4th gear, bogs like a mother, but it can do it. However on my '14 sport I got an automatic because my wife isn't comfortable with a manual. Not saying she can't drive one, but she prefers an auto. If we were to go wheelin somewhere I'd want her to share in the fun but also be able to get us out if something happened to me and I couldn't drive. I love manuals and always will, but automatics definitely make life a little easier.
