Between the two the Mustang wins my vote hands down its a pilots airplane. There is however a reason Dick Bong had more kills in WWII than any other pilot and it's not just because the P-38 looks fast on the ground.

Top US pilot maybe. But most good Allied pilots were rotated home to train the next batch before they got killed or racked up too many kills and became a target and bad PR when they died in combat.

The Germans were the top WWII pilots. But they fought until they were killed.

April 1944 the Messerschmitt ME262 was introduced for combat and everything else seemed slow.

I LOVE WWII era aircraft. Especially the big bombers. Those old piston pounders are one of the best sounds in the world IMHO. The B-17 Flying Fortress' engines sound insane! I'm a rotor head at heart though so my FAVORITE thing is Korean War era thru Vietnam era piston pounder helicopters, like the Sikorsky S-58/UH-34 helo, that uses a B-17 radial piston engine on it. Sounds insane!
