GOLER WASH TO BADWATER
Death Valley has always been a place that Cindy and I loved to explore and one of our favorite routes in was from the Panamint Valley side and through Goler Wash. Of course, 25 years ago, it was a very different experience with nobody on the trail, even on a weekend. Anyway, here are a few pics that we took from one of those trips and with some good friends of ours.
Stopping to check out the old Ballarat monument down in the Panamint Valley before heading in.
Driving up the alluvial fan leading up to Goler Wash.
Making a stop at the mouth of the canyon to soak in the view of the valley.
Time to head on in.
Making a turn to visit a very cool homestead.
It's hard to imagine now but back before this place became internet famous, Barker Ranch, the place where Charles Mason once lived and was captured, used to be a wonderful cabin that you could stay in.
On the move again and heading up to Megel Pass.

Working our way down into Butte Valley.
Some chukars we came across along the way.
Making a stop at the old Geologist Cabin with the Striped Butte in the distance.
Further down the trail, we also made a stop over at Warm Springs.
It's hard to imagine now but back then, it was a beautiful place that was a clean and super nice place that you could stay at and with crystal clear blue water in the pool.
Once we got into the valley, we headed up to the lowest point in North America, Badwater. Here you can see how back then, there wasn't a big parking lot, fancy boardwalk, restrooms or anything really.

And, I'm pretty sure it was about this time that I ran out of floppy discs
I hope you enjoyed our little trip down memory lane and seeing what trails out in Death Valley were like before the internet and all the social media whores ruined it for everyone.

Wow! That area looks so different! Wish I would have seen it back then. That was always one of my favorite routes. Had to have done it half a dozen times.

Excellent pictures! Really like seeing those old-school offroaders in their prime.
What's crazy, is that this is how it looked for at least the two decades that I had been visiting the area, prior to the internet. It's still a great route but it breaks my heart to see how much has changed and not for the better.
Kinda crazy to think but what you see is pretty much all you really needed to do just about any trail, even in places like Moab.

Thatās awesome! I had that same lift and 31ās on my 97 TJ. I also had the hi-lift but mounted to the front bumper.AND SO IT BEGAN
Being that this is a Jeep and that does mean "just empty every pocket", it didn't take long for us to start making "necessary" mods. Of course, being that we were working on a budget, a Rubicon Express (does anyone even remember who those guys are?) 2" budget boost is where the slippery slope started along with a set of massive 31x10.50 BFG MT's.
Here's a few shots from one of the very first write-ups I did and as you can see, the box I received contained coil spacers, shocks, bump stop extensions and even stickers BUT... no instructions LOL!
But, if it weren't for the fact that so few products came with instructions and or the ones that did were so bad, I would have never been prompted to help others with my write-ups

And this was our TJ now looked like with 2" of lift and 31's
You can see that I had also installed a CB radio by this time and mounted a Hi-Lift Jack to the rear bumper.

With our 2" lift installed and big and badass 31" BFG MTs, it was time to head on up to Big Bear and take on some rocks! On this trip, we went up with friends that have a cabin up by the lake and to take on Holcomb Creek.
Here's a shot of everyone meeting up for the run.

As crazy as it may seem now, a lot of our friends wheeled anything and everything other than just Jeeps and amazingly, the trails were still tame enough that they could still take them on.
Of course, we still loved our TJ

LOL - it was a different time for sure. On this trip, we had actually encountered an old Blazer that was stuck good on the rocks and in this pic, you can see us helping him out with a Hi-Lift.

Great Pics! Ran that trail recently and is certainly one of my favorites down here and really because the change in scenery over the desert. It still looks very much the same, minus the size of what the creek crossing was back then
