Rear ProRock 60 question

Since were throwing out newbie questions, can someone tell me what the significance of the axle housing number(size) actually is? I.e., 30, 44, 60, 80...does that number actual mean anything, or is it just a number?

With how light your WJ is, the size tires you're running and the type of wheeling you probably do, I'd have to bet that you'll be fine with your Dana 30 for a long time to come.

I sure hope so. But damn those gears are small.

I think it's the model or design number. Bigger the number the bigger the parts.

Yea i get the bigger number/bigger part but, i was wondering what coined the number, like, maybe it was a measurement of some sort...idk...just a random thought. Lo
