Trail rack??

Has anybody tried to make their own trail rack. They are all in the $400.00 price range so I'm thinking I could do better cheaper. If anybody else has already done so please post up some pics. I'm going to stay late after work tomorrow so I can get started on mine.

I tried.. To say the least it was epic failure. If you go with one that is actually attached to the sheet metal tailgate it probably won't hold much weight. I made mine with lightweight material and attached it much the same as a few aftermarket companies do theirs and wasn't able to put much more than a few sleeping bags (not the two-legged kind either) and a couple lawn chairs before seeing the tail gate start to flex.

Ya I haven't seen any being actually put to use on jeeps so I was worried about the weight capacity. I need a way to store a couple of bags or maybe even a stroller.

You might try going back thru the JKX pics from a couple weeks ago, I'm not a hundred percent sure but I think Moby was sporting one. Might be able to get an idea what brand it was and see how it is attached. If I ever try another one I think I'd mount it to my tire carrier.

Cool thanks. I'll take a look and give it a try. If it's anything decent once i finish it I'll post up some pics.

I've been looking at this one from Rockslide Engineering, or at least something along these lines: https://www.rockslideengineering.com/product/ez-rack/

Seems like a concept that could be done on your own. Wouldn't need to necessarily make it round to fit like this, but I like the idea of using the tire as the base. The more I read into it, the stock carrier seems pretty robust, and even more so if you get any of the reinforcement kits.

^^ That's great, until you get a flat. After the PITA of taking everything off to change a tire, you then get to figure out how to use that setup with a tire that won't hold air.

X2 on this. In a perfect world this would be an option but I would want to steer clear of something like that. My suggestion was for a rack that attaches directly to the tire carrier itself and not be in the way. However, you'll want to be sure you aren't already testing the limits of the tire carrier (an OEM carrier especially) with a larger than normal spare. An example of this would be a 37-40" tire on a Shittybuilt carrier,(or anything above a bicycle tire on a Tereflex hinged carrier).

Hmmm seems like could be an option for anyone looking to stick to 33" or 35" though? Even with a flat, seems like the tire would still have some structural integrity to it when on the rim. At least enough to hold 50-100 lbs. Maybe? Possibly?

I can see being able to make something, if you have a swing out bumper carrier. Cant see much working on the stock setup. Could kind of make your own LOD inspired setup.

I started working on it today. I took the spare tire off and made a bracket that is mounted in between the spare tire mount and tailgate. I also cut all of the pieces for the basket out of some square tube. I'll tack it up tomorrow and load up some photos once I figure out how to do that. I have a drawing bit for some reason I can't load it?

Sucks that the tailgate is so weak. I need to fab a rear bumper with a tire carrier. I can modify this rack to mount to that. Looks like I have more work to do.......

I bet if you use the Teraflex kit to reinforce your tailgate it will support it.:rolleyes2:
