I guarantee you for parents it’s a daily thought. We just don’t say anything because verbalizing is agonizing. Every day is a blessing. And something reminds me everyday that something could happen to lose someone so close.

Actually, I think about it quite often given my kids’ ages. Today was one of those days. I received an email from the school about a recent incident from last week (after the fact because that is what happens).
Turns out two girls wrote a hit list and had plans to shoot up the school. The FBI was involved, the girls have been expelled, and supposedly in their court hearing they bragged about the plans and also about having easy access to guns in their homes.
Edit: and btw, I’m talking about a middle school (6th-8th grades). I have two kids there.

I recall there being a difference in purchase vs possession for some reason here. But this was a discussion I had with someone a few years back and I don't recall the exact details. It was a discussion that came about in regards to concealed carry. IMO, purchase and possession should be the same, but you know, all those words/lawyers/etc

There was a credible threat at my son and daughters jr high school last year. Eighth grader was gonna shoot up the school. There was a very brief lock down. Kid was apprehended, suspended. The parents had guns in the house. Luckily it didn’t get worse than that.
It’s awesome getting the follow up official letter to parents.
My kids are now in high school with 3000 students. Not a day goes by. I can’t dwell on the what if’s, but it’s still there in very back at some point.
Some of that is just being a parent. It’s not like I’ll feel better when they go off to college.

Same here. My wife's school has had several threats and just this week the staff received a pretty vague email from the school administration. It was calling all staff to be present and vigilant during the student pick up and to pay close attention the the bathroom and several other secluded areas of the campus. There was also a heavy police presence at dismissal. The principal had to cancel her plans to attend a training my wife is at due to this but no specifics have been released as to what triggered this. She is glad to be away this week but also very concerned about the students well being.
The biggest issue is that when the press involves student and kids to get their opinions on this. Sure they are scared and worried, but high schools walking out to gain attention for better "gun control". While I'm sure there are students who are passionate and believe in this cause the other 90% see it as an opportunity to legitimately skip school.

I lie somewhere in the middle of all this, and I dont have children yet to worry about that fear. But I will say, banning guns will only worsen many things. having said that, I dont see any reason to not make the criteria stricter and harder to obtain, may return the idea of proper responsibilities. Having said all of that, this whole epidemic is more a social issue than a gun issue, a million cliches out there but they are all true- "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". value of life is an afterthought for many and gun safety and education is long gone in majority of homes I'd have to guess. I grew up afraid of guns even though I shot them, knowing they weren't toys- I respected what they can do for someone in the right or wrong hands.
I agree that attacking with a gun is probably a higher chance if death than a knife but regardless of the weapon it's still the person doing the act. In this day and age it's just different, I'm ok with laws changing to better the situation, but would join the rebellion if the govt took guns away- and there would be a huge one- as I believe it is one of the bases and reasons we can remain free and not oppressed.

I read an article that described the boy... his hobbies, his social media posts, images he used etc... 2 paragraphs in I could see a troubled person with a hatred for life.
All I can do is my part... by being a responsible parent who: pays attention to them, teaches them to enjoy life, helps them to build skill sets, the need to respect others and to respect themselves...

No, it doesn’t...and I’ve researched all of these issues enough to know that about 8 teenagers die per day in car crashes and about 11 die per day from alcohol. For comparison, in all of 2017 about 35 kids were killed by firearms in middle and high school shootings. Without a doubt, the drive to and from school is statistically the most dangerous part of my kids’ school day.
I don’t sit around and worry. I talk to my kids about what is going on in their lives, about their friends, about their sports and, unfortunately, also about how to run, hide, or fight like hell depending on the situation.
I also pay close attention to Legislation in my state and to what my kids’ schools are doing proactively, and reactively, when legitimate threats occur.
And on days like today, when I get barraged with texts from other parents asking if I think it’s safe to send my kids to school tomorrow, I typically respond with much of the same things I have said in this thread. The bottom line is that life isn’t “safe” and it never will be.
None of that, however, means that I accept that we can’t, or shouldn’t, try to do better by our youth than we are presently doing.
