Teraflex Hinged Tire Carrier with adjustable tire mount

i would say that the topic of the TF carrier tends to get a bit more heat only because it has been discussed SO MUCH, that every time it comes up, well, this happens....

If you do a basic online search using google or bing, you'll find several issues come up on this. There is a whole thread here, but many other sites and forums discuss the pros and cons.

Up to the buyer and what they want to do based on how they plan to wheel.

Works fine for many, not so much for some. Would hate to be part of that some though.

hmmm did a basic search not much came up - looking for failures which based on the criticism I would think there would be a lot posted but nothing. There are many negative comments on the bumper mounted TF carrier but didn't find anything on the new tailgate mounted.
After reading many of these "full moon" exchanges,
1. people need thicker skin
2. sometimes comments can be less informational criticism and more "I'm the expert and you wasted your money on a piece of shit"
3. the buyer will always support what they've spent their money on, myself I've made many costly mistakes and am always open to various opinions, when they become less than useful opinions I stop listening
4. no one product is right for everyone, we buy, we try to make our rigs unique and useful to ourselves
5. jumping on the bandwagon seems to be common but sift through all the shit and there is useful information

I think there needs to be a thread filter that automatically renames any thread that contains "Terraflex" and "Tire Carrier" to "Kicking a dead horse".

1. people need thicker skin

Agreed but, being this is the internet, it ain't gonna happen.

2. sometimes comments can be less informational criticism and more "I'm the expert and you wasted your money on a piece of shit"

Sometimes, comments that are backed up with photos, videos and eye witness accounts can be dismissed as "bashing" and taken as personal attacks by people who don't like hearing negative comments about products they've chosen to buy. But really, if you're really happy with what you've bought, what should anyone care what others think?

3. the buyer will always support what they've spent their money on, myself I've made many costly mistakes and am always open to various opinions, when they become less than useful opinions I stop listening

That's because most people don't like admitting that they may have made a mistake. As far as opinions go, they are what they are. I always try to back up what I have to share with experience and facts but, you can take them or leave them. It really makes no difference to me.

4. no one product is right for everyone, we buy, we try to make our rigs unique and useful to ourselves

Absolutely. The OP asked about a TeraFlex tire carrier and some people talked about how much they love theirs and some shared what they have seen with it and other tail gate mounted spares and with the hopes of providing real and factual information. Just because fanboys don't like what they hear doesn't mean that the OP may not want to know about it.

5. jumping on the bandwagon seems to be common but sift through all the shit and there is useful information
:twocents:

:cheesy: I suppose it all depends on who's bandwagon everyone is jumping on. Is it still "shit" that needs to be sifted through if it's yours? :twocents:

I am really digging the Poison spyder rear tire carrier. A little pricey which makes me want to research a little more but over all it has what I want.

***Edit***

Nevermind on the Poison spyder tire carrier........Only holds up to a 35" tire

For the front, I am going to get this when I have the money.

http://www.lodoffroad.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16162&cat=23&page=1

Any options on these??

The Poison Spyder tire carrier holds a much bigger tire than a 35. I've seen many run a 37 on it and it says up to a 42" on their site.

BTW, not to belabor the point but, this is a video I found of what a tire will do to a car and what it looks like coming through a windshield on the highway...

If you have or are planning to get this tire carrier, please do everyone a favor on the road and check it for cracks on a regular basis.

I actually went on a call once where a tire fell off a truck coming the opposite way of a woman driving a car. The truck was going about 80, and the woman was going about 80ish as well. The tire bounced over the freeway median and hit her windshield. She was killed instantly. Items falling off vehicles kill people quite often. Just recently a small 3' section of 3" diameter pipe fell off a pickup truck on wb 580 in Livermore. Pipe bounced and went through a males windshield and then right though his chest killing him instantly. Big ass jeep tire flying around is going to slay some people. Imagine if it caused a high speed multi-vehicle pile up. That is a whole lot of people getting banged up over a imported bracket made out of recycled soda pop cans.

And that car was parked. Imagine at 60 mph... Idk what would be the weight of that tire but a 37" doesn't get to be taken lightly.

Still, for having that carrier, I think that the problem is their adjustable bracket right ? So as long as you don't go over 35" you're fine with that carrier since you don't need that bracket.

Ask gtony12 what happens. He had $20+ thousand in damage when a tractor trailer tire hit him.

Yup, I think about him every time I see one of these carriers now.

I can't even imagine what it was like see all this in person. As mentioned on the link I posted up earlier, my wife and I almost got hit by a tire coming from the opposite side of the freeway. Fortunately, I was able to maneuver away from it at the last minute but, the brand new Camary behind me wasn't so lucky.

Still, for having that carrier, I think that the problem is their adjustable bracket right ?

Yes, the optional adjustable bracket is the biggest problem. I understand that TeraFlex is no longer blaming their customers for improper installation and now provide support gussets but, they still haven't address the issue of back spacing requirements. In the end, I still fear that jiggling caused by a spare not 100% secured to the tailgate can still cause metal fatigue and a failure. But, that's just me being paranoid.

So as long as you don't go over 35" you're fine with that carrier since you don't need that bracket.

Truth be told, I have known guys to run a 37" on their factory tailgate without problems. The biggest issue is that you need to make sure that your spare is firmly pressing up against the rubber isolators to help prevent jiggling. If you don't, the biggest problem I've seen is the spot welds start to break free on the sheet metal. The other problem is that if you catch your spare on a ledge or on a steep climb on the trail, you WILL do damage to your tail gate. I have seen this happen many times. Of course, if you don't wheel on challenging trails, this may not be a concern.

:cheesy: I see you're the kind of guy that thinks your opinion is the only one that should matter and if anyone disagrees with you, it's gotta be "bashing". God forbid that anyone should be allowed to voice their opinions and if they do, they're "jk gods". :rolleyes2:

If you're happy with spending $400 on something you really didn't even need in the first place, more power to you. :thumb:

I know I like mine. There are different and better options out there for many types of applications. My only complaint with mine is you can't clean behind it. Other than that it works great for what I do. I also have the MetalCloak rear bumper and have the option of adding their tire carrier if I ever go to 37's. I paid more than $400 for mine so if you can get one for that it would be well worth it IMO. I wish I would have kept my stock hinges though. I couldn't take it off if I wanted to at this point.

I had a childhood friend and her mom died when a wheel from an 18 wheeler came off and went through her windshield. It decapitated her.

lol yea, I've had people jump on and unfortunately by the end of the ride there's so much that even I need to get a bigger shovel to get through it

for a minute that tires off video looked like something I witnessed here in the US, I travel a lot of freeway multistate miles and I've seen the damage that stuff falling off at high speed will do..

I was about to buy the TF carrier and was looking at it probably like every other buyer does, weight and ease of use. That is until I read about the issue on here and held off ordering one knowing I'd be close to their showroom to check it out. With the knowledge I got here and looking at the design of how the tire actually gets supported when I saw it in their showroom well...i'm still looking for a carrier...aside from that one very critical joint it does look like a nice design.

The stock carrier has been more than enough for the 35 I have mounted on it but don't plan to use it for the 37's I've got planned. The one thing I have done is use an extended receiver bar to help protect from the tire from taking the hit on a ledge. It did it's job on EJS this last time, not sure how effective it is in the long term but glad I had it.

They talk about two different tire sizes. Anyone have experience with this tire carrier?

This is what I'm afraid of. I have the tire carrier. Would I spend my money differently today, YES. I'd get the new Poison Spyder rear bumper and carrier. But, since I spent the money, I won't throw away $400. Here's what I've done for safety though, until I do something different.

1. Check my carrier regularly. I've decided to use my stock tire mount and not the TF tire mount with the hinges as it seems stronger to me.
2. Added a daystar extention to BOTH sides. I have one on the driver side in the original bump location. I cut up one for the passenger side and superglued it to the TF hinge.
3. Check my carrier regularly.
4. Either have room in my rear to put my tire and also carry ratchet straps to ratchet my tire to my roof should I experience a break or crack.
5. Check my carrier regularly.

For those who have one, take the advice given. Not sure what else to say. It does hurt to hear that what you spent money probably wasn't the best choice, but I believe in getting the hurtful truth and not being ignorant to your mistakes.

I also have thick skin, so I absorb a lot of the hits against a lot of what I've bought and put on my Jeep.

Hey Eddie, maybe you can answer the problem I am having. My spare appears to bounce when I drive down the road. I have 35' trail grapplers on stock 17's and day star bump stops. When I look at it while not driving it looks like the spare doesn't move at all but the tail gate itself actually bounces some. Could that be problematic?

So, what is the consensus here? It seems as if the newer versions have been beefed up. Should those of us with the older versions proactively reach out to TF and see if they will do the right thing by us?
