Tranny pan tapped for drain plug.

The metal is too thin to tap for threads. You'd need to weld some thicker metal on the pan and then drill and tap. You'd still want to remove the pan to change the filter, but a drain plug would make the whole process a lot easier. Interested to see if one exists or anyone has done the mod.

If you really want to, remove it, drill the correct sized hole and have a female npt nipple tig welded on, otherwise as previously stated it's to thin to tap, it would just pull out/strip

Subbed. I just changed my tranny filter last weekend. That process was way more involved than it should have been! It seems like they were TRYING to add every little frustrating thing about vehicle work, and make it just a little worse!

if you google search transmission fluid change in a 2012 3.6 there is a goofy guy who makes a great video doing just that. he had no issues with the thickness of the pan with the drain he used.

Oh yea, the 42RLE is WORLDS easier than the WA580. Just drop the pan and thats it, two tricky bolts is all.

The Mercedes WA580 on the other hand...

First off, the pan isnt bolted on, its clamped, with fucking torx bolts and some stupid lip clamps. The last torx bolt cant be reached with any mortal-mans tools.

Then you gotta drain the fucker by cracking one side, pretty standard for trannys, but it all dribbles to the rear, where it hits the fucking crossmember and runs everywhere.

Then you still cant get it out because the fucking exhaust crossover needs moved. Yes, the god damn exhaust pipe needs fucking pulled. Pray to whatever god you want that those five bolts arent seized.

Then after all thats done, you still have two quarts of fluid in the pan you have to support with one hand, while pulling down on the exhaust with the other to get it down and forward about two feet. THEN you can dump it.

Oh, and the fucking swiss-cheeze crossmember now covered in fluid? its going to drip for days!

ok, my rant is over. Its an interesting change in tranny pan design, but terrible follow through.

I'm just getting to the point of having to do a fluid change.
After hearing this shit show I think I'm just going to drop it at a dealer lol.

I did mine about 5000 miles ago and it was pretty easy but a pain in the ass and messy. It takes more time draining it then anything. I just figured I'd ask to see if anyone has put a plug or found an aftermarket pan with a drain plug. That would make the job 100 times easier. I have looked and can't seem to find anything as far as a new pan. I did see the video of the guy who put a plug but as stated the pan is pretty thin so to put a plug in it without welding it scares me a bit thinking it could be a leaking or weak point. I guess I'll keep searching. It may come down to welding a drain on.

JeepFan made a great DIY pump to extract as much fluid out of the pan as possible before you remove the pan. This helps big time to reduce the mess you'll have when you pull the pan. I would highly recommend pulling the pan to change your fluid as it will give you a chance to check/clean the debris magnet.

Yeah, his pump setup is pretty awesome. I'm gonna have to piece one together for myself soon. 👍

Not to hijack but Im thinking you could use that pump to bleed brakes also?
Maybe need to add a check valve or piece of line inside the jar to keep it submerged?

Has anyone tried one of these to clear the fluid out first before dropping the pan? I've used it for years on small motors and it works great on the diffs. I haven't had the pleasure of doing the tranny yet and trying it there.

With all do respect not laughing at you, but oh my gosh your rant/description of the pan drop was hilarious. Thanks for that. Cheers
