Hot Rods & Old Classics - Lets See Em...

That’s what I was thinking. That engine was made long before hardened valve seats and steeper contact angles. Who knows, maybe the heads were replaced or updated along the way?

The lead would be for the valves, assuming the heads haven’t been redone with hardened seats.

The high octane would be for a high compression build. I doubt someone would build a street 383 that requires such high octane. But who knows.

It’s quite a bit of work to machine out the old soft seats! One of these days I will find out first hand since I have a Chevy 396 from a 67 Chevelle sitting in the basement. It will require the heads to be modified for hard seats, new valves and all the related valve train parts. It might be easier just to replace both heads since they are not original. I believe that they were off a 427 and are closed chamber putting the compression at 11 to 1 or so.

I would guess with its age and mileage, it would damn near get a oil change every time it got driven.

It’s nice looking car! I bet a collector will scoop it up.

My oldest son has a 1953 Willys

The second son has a 1985 cj7

The third son has a 1949 Chevy


Then my oldest son got another project before the first was finished
