Old Crusty- 1958 FC170

Started to track down why my fuel gauge doesn't work. Turns out it's bad.

While I have the gauge cluster apart, I'm going to swap out the internals and install them in my old gauge cluster

Pry the Bazel face away from the back

Unbolt all the nuts, and remove the two screws.

Waiting on parts..

Brief description of the tear down.
Remove all the nuts off the back, as well as the power strap. The strap takes power from fuel gauge to power the water temp gauge. On the fuel gauge there's an internal voltage regulator , if it has issues or this gauge is wired wrong it'll blow both gauges.. Ask me how I know

Remove the two screws

Pry the lip back on the Bazel

Now you can pop the Bazel off

Pop off the needle, same on the old and new gauge

The new gauge will require removal of the screws

Old gauge, will require drilling of the brass revits
ImageUploadedByWAYALIFE1451012398.408287.jpg

The mounting holes are spaced different on the new speedo, overlay the old one and drill out the tin old gauge face

Install the needle back on the face and install the screws. Unfortunately the old needle will not work and the odometer isn't perfect. Fortunately I don't give a shit

The old faces for the water and fuel gauge are opposite so they won't switch over.

Install the temp / fuel gauge back into the shell

Assemble the same way it came apart

This is a nice project. I always thought the FC's were cool. The photos are great & helpful for future Old Iron restorers. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, there's several great boards for info on these old FC's but you really have to dig and most of the time cross into the Willys trucks or wagons for tech info.
I'm hoping by just posting it on here a Google search will help someone else out.

Now if these fixes would go as smooth as they look on here that would be great !!

Not a damn one has gone smooth! Hours trying to track down why a gauge doesn't work !

Yeah, I never seen one when I lived in Ohio. 4WD hardware bought one to restore. From what i gather it's a major rust bucket.

Yeah my truck project is rusted all to hell and needs extensive metal work. Luckily i'm not going for a classic restore and plan to use the shit out of it so making it perfect isn't a high priority.

Rust bucket is being generous. That thing is in sad shape. It looks like it's sat outside for the last 20 years.

Finally did a little work on the FC.

Decided to ditch the factory single bowl master cylinder.

After little research or various FC websites, the FC connection had a write up on installing a dual wilwood master cylinder.

Of course it's not a bolt in, so I started "fabbing"
I'm not a fabricator so take that word loosely

Good fab work. Nice brake booster.

I heard you talk about your FC but I've never seen this thread. That thing is bad ass! Great build chris.
