I’m guessing gophers… I got real good at getting them with a pump action BB gun, they used to eat all of my chicken feed and goat feed.

That hole looks too small for a coyote lol and I’ve used coyote urine to scare critters off before and it works.

New Jersey, East Orange county. They have 384 ppm. They say it is very hard and supposedly brand new forks and knives came out rusted from the dishwasher.

That sucks. Two of my Colorado mountain homes had softeners but it was a long time ago. I don't recall exactly what was used but one was Culligan. It worked ok but just had to keep up on the salt. Had a bypass valve so I could bypass it and water plants without the salt water.
