RubiCAT Gettin EVO'd UP!!

we took rubicat out to moab immediately after it got back on its feet and so we weren't able to post up detailed pics of the coil overs. i'll try to post an update here later on today and with more pics than were posted on facebook.

Having driven behind rubicat for the better part of two days, I have to say that this is such a nice looking jeep! Plus it looked like it performed very well. I can't wait to see/hear how the suspension performs on future runs. It looked like Mel was enjoying himself immensely on the EVO run in Moab.

On the Friday before Moab EJS, Off Road Evolution finally got in the new EVO spec King coilovers that we had been waiting on to finish up their bolt-on coilover system. Below are some of the pics of the final install:

How does the ride compare to that of the EVOLever? Also, I remember people saying that they didn't like the Rebel coils because they hung out in the back, any way we could get a pic to show that these are better (I saw them in person at the "Man Mall" and I know they are better, just want a pic for all those that may be thinking "How is this different from Rebel?")? I mean realistically the Rockstars are protecting their mounting point sufficiently and they appear to be at more of an upward angle compared to that other brand. It appeared that there was very little chance of hitting them on anything, say when you come off a rock while climbing, but a pic says a thousand words :)

How does the ride compare to that of the EVOLever?

The EVO Lever is a cantilever system that allows you to run a coil over with a triple bypass shock and because of its design, provides 14" of travel without having anything hang low or requires cutting into the tub. It itself doesn't do anything to influence your ride quality, it's the coil overs and bypass shocks that do. Having said that, you can pretty much have your coil overs set to ride however you want and for the most part, ours have been set to ride similarly to Moby which has the EVO Lever and Double Throwdowns front and rear. Where you will see the difference is in the amount of articulation you have (12" up front and 11.25" in the rear on this new setup versus 14" on the DTD) and in how fast you can drive your Jeep across bigass whoops and really rough terrain. This new entry level kit will get you going fast but the DTD will allow you to drive stupid fast off road - trust me, there really is nothing that compares to it but of course, it comes with a very high price tag.

In all fairness, I am one of those people and, it still is one of the reasons why I don't like the Rebel kit. In addition to attaching to the factory axle mounts which hang way low, the rear upper mounts are positioned way far back and that allows more of the coil overs to be exposed. This angled back position also creates a falling rate that provides less dampening as the axle moves upward. Of course, the worst part about it for me is that for the price, you only get 9.5" of travel from full droop to full bump out of the 12" coil over they use - this is a fact.

What makes the new EVO entry level kit a better option is that it bolts up to factory mounting points which allow the coil overs to be positioned much more vertically, more out of harms way, with a greater amount of travel with better dampening to boot. Because this kit utlizes Rockstars, you also get the benefit of 1.5" of addtitional armored ground clearance at the axle.

Of course, we haven't even talked about the front yet. Unlike the competition, this new EVO entry level coil over system has easy to install bolt on towers with a much higher upper mounting point and that allows you to still run a 12" coil over and without requiring you to set your Jeep's minimum lift height, sky high.

Without question, the EVO Lever is the best coil over system you can get when it comes to performance, amount of articulation it provides and protection of components. This new entry level coil over kit was not designed to compete with it but rather, provide a system that is far superior to anything else out there and at a fraction of the price of the EVO Lever.
 
I'm confused, so do you cut off the factory mounting brackets?

nothing gets cut up front. in order to install rockstars, you need to trim about 1.5" off the rear lower control arm mounts. the new rockstar brackets will become your new higher and armored shock mounts. for us, we were originally going to have an evo lever installed and so we cut everything off to have high clearance brackets installed. since we decided to go this route, we needed to have new custom mounts installed and that's what you're seeing in these pics.
