It's approaching the Peshtigo [Wisconsin] Fire in 1871. The most consistent figure is 1.2M acres but I've read as high as 3.8M. 1200-2400 killed. It happened at the same time as the Great Chicago fire which explains why most people haven't heard of it actually.
