Really depends on water clarity, fishing pressure and type of fishing...I’d start with 7.5’ 3x tapered leader (easier to cast than a 9’ or 12’)...get some tippet spools in 3x & 4x to tie to your leader as it shortens (and it will, lost fish, break offs on the trees etc)...get a decent hemostat and a line nipper. Later on, you’ll be casting 12’ leaders with 4x or 5x tippet for finicky trout on dries, or tying 4’ of 2x-3x for small streamers like wooly buggers

In the last 3 years... including the fly setup I just ordered, the Spin Reels kits I bought and fishing licenses every year... I've probably spent about $800.. and haven't caught a fish since 2016.. Lol :doh:

So I ended up getting the Orvis 9’-5wt Clearwater setup.... and Rebuilt my fishing pack with all the fly necessities... I have been practicing in my backyard and can already tell Fly fishing is for me compared to a spinner... but here is my problem... Good streams are 4-5 hours from me... I’m just not into shore fishing the overcrowded small lakes around here and I’m not into sitting in a small boat. However, what I do have here is miles of awesome beaches right in my backyard. I can pack a couple beers, throw on some flip flops and be casting in 20 min...
So I want to buy another rod for surf fishin... What do you guys suggest.. 9’ - 9wt? What size line, leader & tippet do I need? Larger Flies? Thx.

For flats fishing down in the keys, I’ve always used my 9’6” 8wt. Going after Tarpon I step up up my 10. Bigger key is a larger arbor spool that can hold more backing for longer fights. Nothing worse than getting spooled.

When you say flats in the keys... you mean no waves right? I was thinking 9wt because I’ll be dealing with crashing waves... (not sure if that matters)

Some small waves, but not surf fishing. You’ll definitely need to get the fly out beyond the surf and having the 9wt will help. In the beach areas on the east coast, I’ve always gone out off of break waters or larger rock outcroppings and worked around those with streams and had the best luck there.

Nice...just got back from three days in Stehekin Valley fishing the river...epic last day of fishing Wednesday, including my biggest cutthroat at 20” and fat, about five lbs...a pair of 20” rainbows, several 17-18” bows & cutts. All told over 2 1/2 days of fishing, 15 bows and 25 cutties, mostly on my 8’ 4wt Winston Pure swinging double bead head soft hackles
